The predecessor of the Church of St. Imre in BÅ‘ was already standing around the middle of the 13th century. The history of the town also includes its development into a market town: in 1499, King Vladislaus II granted BÅ‘ further privileges, including exemption from tithes and customs duties as well as the right to hold markets. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in BÅ‘ can include the town as a destination in their own plans.
History
A comprehensive archaeological investigation of the Church of St. Imre in BÅ‘ in 2008 identified six construction phases. The renovation completed in 2010 made its earlier construction phases clearly visible on site.
In the 12th century, BÅ‘ came into the possession of the Templars, who established a convent there; it served as a so-called „place of authentication“ for property transactions.
Since ancient times, an important long-distance road ran across the river terrace of the Répce; in antiquity, it was connected to the Roman Amber Road between Scarbantia (Sopron) and Savaria (Szombathely). In 1666, the authorization to hold markets was confirmed; during the town’s heyday, there were four nationwide livestock markets every year, as well as guilds of shoemakers and weavers.
Culture
The statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands on Köztársaság tér in Bő, in a chapel-like niche on the road leading to the Répce crossing. The statue of the Sorrowful Virgin is also located on Köztársaság tér. It depicts the grieving mother with Christ, who died on the cross, lying in her lap.
At the end of Hunyadi utca in Bő stands the statue of Our Lady of Hungary with the infant Jesus; it was erected in 1917. The statue of the Blessed Virgin with the infant Jesus on Széchenyi utca was erected in 1913.
The crucifix in Petőfi utca depicts Jesus on the cross with the Sorrowful Virgin beneath him.
Nature
The Répce directly surrounds Bő and offers tourists who come here pleasant surroundings for relaxation.
Bő is part of the Thermal Cycling Route; a fully developed cycle path connects the town with Bük and Bükfürdő.
