Lakes, Forest and Trails
The Pacsmag Lakes Nature Reserve lies on the outskirts of Tamási, in the valley of the Koppány River. It consists mainly of wetlands, with some smaller areas of woodland and grassland. A birdwatching program takes visitors on a four-hour guided tour covering 8 km around the lakes. From observation towers, you can spot birds including ferruginous ducks, red-crested pochards, herons and great egrets. The tour is a clearly defined way to discover the lakes and their birdlife.
For a shorter walk, the Miklósvár Park Forest has hiking and walking trails. A level path of about 1 km runs around Miklósvár Lake. The Dám Pont Ecotourism Visitor Centre is also located in the Miklósvár district, in the park forest. It has an interactive exhibition and activity area, as well as programs and guided tours. On days when the visitor centre is closed, Dám Pont welcomes groups by prior arrangement.
The 20-hectare Vadaspark showcases the flora and fauna of the Gyulaj forests. According to the information boards, a green-marked trail offers the chance to see large wild animal species of Hungarian forests, including fallow deer, red deer, roe deer, mouflon and wild boar. At Várhegy, a hiking trail combines exercise with information boards and family-friendly rest areas. It is designed for children and adults, as well as for pedestrians and cyclists. From the viewpoint on Várhegy, the view extends across the surrounding area to the vineyards of the Tolna wine region.
Cycling and Special Activities
Two cycling routes offer different rides. The 6 km cycle path connects Tamási with Pári. The 10.4 km Tamási–Regöly route leads to the neighbouring village of Regöly, follows the Koppány and then passes through the Pacsmag Lakes Nature Reserve. This gives you the choice of a route connecting to Pári or one that takes in the river and nature reserve when planning your day’s activities.
The Tamási Velodrome is another special option for cycling enthusiasts. It is considered the only velodrome in Hungary currently in operation. The banked circuit can be used by prior arrangement. If you prefer to get around on foot, the Miklósvár Park Forest has hiking and walking trails; the trails at Várhegy are also specifically designed for pedestrians and cyclists.
Local History, Churches and Regional Cuisine
The Tamási Gallery, located in the House of Culture, features permanent and temporary exhibitions. The building was created by converting a former prison. The Local History Collection focuses on the city’s past. Religious landmarks include the Rozália Chapel on Kálvária Hill, which dates back to the 16th century, and a Baroque Roman Catholic church built between 1735 and 1745.
Regional events also add their own highlights. Tamasi hosts the “Trófea Vadgasztronómia Fesztivál” every year, a nationwide cooking competition for game dishes. The Tamási Lovasnapok horse festival is held in connection with the celebrations on August 20. Culinary traditions and events thus complement the city’s nature and cultural offerings.
