Bonnya’s character is reflected in its historic architecture and small, distinctive details: restored longhouses with verandas, a white Reformed church above the village, and the Koppány Stream flowing through Bonnya each add a different note. Villagescape and architectural history
Many traditional longhouses with verandas have been restored. Many retain their original floor plans and form; the street-facing façades of some houses feature historic plasterwork. Bonnya’s only church is a white Evangelical Reformed church that stands above the village and was built in 1883. Those interested in architectural styles can compare two perspectives: the longhouses draw the eye with their floor plans, preserved forms and individual façade details, while the church creates a different focal point with its elevated position above the village.
The chapel for Roman Catholic worshippers was established in a former school building. A small bell stand stands in front of the chapel, which has no tower. The Vida Cross is located at one corner of the building; the base of the white stone cross depicts three female figures. Another distinctive feature is Bonnya’s wooden altar: its side facing the street is covered with elaborate carvings, and two female figures stand on the base. Nearby, about half a kilometre farther along the footpath from the village centre, beyond the wooden altar, is the Bödő–Takács Cross, erected in 1909. It was erected later than the Reformed church, which was built in 1883.
Bonnya’s history also provides a point of reference for these architectural styles: around the turn of the 20th century, the village was a characteristically Swabian settlement with a population of more than 1,000 at the time.
The stream and a route through several villages
The Koppány Stream flows through Bonnya. The Völgy kör of the Koppányvölgy Nature Park passes through Törökkoppány, Somogydöröcske, Somogyacsa, Bonnya, Kisbárapáti, Fiad, Szorosad and Kára.
