Discover Szokolya by Narrow-Gauge Railway

You can explore Szokolya on the Királyrét Forest Railway: the narrow-gauge railway runs to a timetable between Királyrét and Kismaros, passing through the municipality. In the valley of the Morgó Stream, its route runs from the banks of the Danube through Szokolya to Királyrét. This makes the village part of a specific railway connection, whose route may itself be useful when planning your trip.

You can reach Szokolya from Kismaros by narrow-gauge railway or bus; Királyrét is also accessible from there by bus or small train. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Szokolya, you can take the train journey into account when planning if Királyrét is one of your intended destinations. Check the current timetable for your travel date before taking the train.

Forest, Lakes and History Along the Nature Trail

The Királyrét Nature Trail is 2.9 kilometres long, has nine stations and is freely accessible. Along the way, visitors can learn about the wildlife and plant life of the forest and lakes, as well as the history of narrow-gauge railways and iron ore mining. Nature observation and the history of technology and mining are presented side by side, offering several ways to engage with the trail. If you are travelling with children, the stations provide specific topics for conversation: you can start with animals, plants and lakes, then turn to the history of the railway or mining. Check for current operating information before your visit.

The nature trail starts at Hiúz Ház, the forest school and visitor centre in Királyrét. Signposts and markings painted on tree trunks make it easier to find your way. The named starting point helps you plan your visit, while signposts and painted markings provide guidance along the way.

A Memorial Room for Two Painters

Szokolya also has an artistic connection: a memorial room for the painters Mányoki Ádám and Viski János is located at 83 Fő utca. It can be visited by prior telephone arrangement. The memorial room offers a different focus from the nature and technology themes of the nature trail. If you plan to visit this cultural site, arrange your visit by telephone in advance.

A Round Trip on Rail Bikes

The Királyréti Hajtánypálya adds a separate round trip to the railway experience. It began operating in 2007, and its separate track is about 750 metres long. A ride on the four-seat rail bikes takes four to five minutes. Before setting out, check whether the facility is currently operating. Unlike the nature trail, this is a different kind of experience: a short ride rather than nine stations covering nature and history.

The Wider Pest Destination

Within the wider destination of Pest, the part of the highlighted Danube Bend tourism area that belongs to Pest County includes the entire Danube Bend, the Visegrád Mountains and the Börzsöny Mountains. This regional context adds a broader perspective to the specific reasons to visit Szokolya.
