Forest and Valley Along the Trail
Oszlai-árok is a side valley of Nagy-völgy, which runs between Bernecebaráti and Nagyoroszi. On some maps, the valley is called Orlai-árok. The Bernecebaráti trail runs through the forests along the valley. From Bernecebaráti, a 6 km marked access trail leads first along the blue, then the green hiking trail markers to the trail. As markings may change, check them before setting out.
Along the way, you’ll encounter different forest habitats: an alder forest alongside a stream provides a habitat for protected plant species; on the slope, a dry oak forest is managed as a protective forest. Together, these examples show two distinct types of forest and their respective functions. Developed stations offer safe views into the gorge-like Oszlai-árok valley. The trail also recounts episodes from Sisa Pista’s adventurous life, as portrayed in the figure of the outlaw.
Building History and Everyday Life
The church tower can be seen from afar as you approach Bernecebaráti. It stands on a hill and has an onion-shaped dome. The Bernecebaráti tájház offers a different picture of village life: established in 2001 with the active involvement of local residents, it depicts the everyday life of the Palóc people in Hungary in an old farmhouse set up for this purpose. The two highlights offer different perspectives: a landmark visible from afar and a glimpse into rural everyday culture.
The built landscape also includes groups of cellars and press houses carved into the rock on the slope of Várhegy and near the Baráti vineyards. Some of the old press houses still contain wine presses. The Máriácska Chapel is a 1 × 1 metre opening carved into andesite tuff. It probably dates from the late 19th century, was remodelled in 1948 and renovated in 1981. The Baroque Huszár-kastély recalls the period when the Huszár family owned Bernece and Baráti in the 18th century. In Bernecebaráti, small rock-cut structures thus stand alongside a chapel and a Baroque castle as very different traces of the village’s history.
