Kozárd: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A complex presentation site for Natura 2000 and geology, particularly volcanology, has been established in the Pogányvár Quarry in Kozárd. The quarry offers opportunities to learn about Miocene volcanic phenomena and sedimentary rocks.

Nature and Geology

The Kelet-Cserhát Landscape Protection Area extends across the administrative territory of Kozárd and was placed under protection in 1989.

The type locality of the Kozárd Formation was exposed in a ditch near the cemetery; this ditch runs parallel to the eastern side of the road from Kozárd to Alsótold. The formation is a marine, brackish deposit between the Badenian volcanites and the freshwater formations of the Pannonian. It is rich in organic remains and occasionally contains redeposited, silicified tree trunks.

Culture and History

By 2023, the rebuilt Kohut Manor had been transformed into the House of Natural Values (Természeti Értékek Háza). The tourist visitor centre Természeti Értékek Háza was ceremonially opened in Kozárd.

The wooden Chapel of the Immaculate Conception was added to the Faluház in 2006 and crowned with a glass pyramid. It houses seven sacred altarpieces and fourteen large Stations of the Cross paintings by the painter János Szurcsik.

Kozárd’s classicist bell tower, built in 1830, is a listed monument.

Local Highlights

On Rákóczi út, the first street on the southern side of the village, the Kozárdi Kamra, opened in 2023, also offers restaurant services.

In October, visitors are invited to Kozárd for the apple harvest.

Getting Around

The Kozárd–Ecseg route is offered as a hiking, cycling and horse-riding tour.
