Mátranovák: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Geographical location

About 1 km outside Mátranovák lies Fehérszék, a rhyolite tuff formation that is rare in Europe. At Fehérszék, water erosion has formed branching channels, deeper erosion gullies and smaller cones. In spring, wildflowers cover the slope of Hegyeske.

Rákos-lápa-bérc mountain is located in the immediate vicinity of Mátranovák. The mountains Nagy-kő, Szilvás-kő and Lajszka are located in the area around Mátranovák.

On the Salgótarján–Mátraszele–Mátraterenye–Mátranovák–Nádújfalu bus route, buses run at least hourly on weekdays and every two hours at weekends.

Culture

The Roman Catholic church of Mátranovák is a late Baroque, single-nave building with a façade tower. The present church was built in 1800 at the expense of the so-called Religious Fund. Outside service times, it is often open and can be visited at any time on request.

The Bányász Emlékház (Miners' Memorial House) displays written materials and photographs about the everyday lives of miners; the visit also includes a film screening about work processes in underground mining.

Hiking and events

The hiking trail “Geological adventures in the heart of the Palóc region” begins in the centre of Mátranovák. The Vargánya Festival was held annually in Mátranovák in June.
