Observe and understand nature
At the Nyugati Kapu Visitor Centre, the interactive “Karszt és Élővilága” exhibition presents the animal and plant life of Bükki Nemzeti Park and the geological formation of the mountains. Nature and geological history are brought together: the exhibition conveys both the diversity of the habitat and how the mountains formed. At Egeresvölgyi Vadaspark, a walkway-like terrace with a short, railed ladder allows visitors to observe the animals more closely. Information boards explain the species found there; the enclosure is home to various deer, roe deer and mouflons. The park is open year-round; check the conditions on site. Combining animal watching with the information boards offers a concrete opportunity to learn about the species that live in the enclosure.
Traditions, history and architecture
The Felsőtárkány Local Heritage House presents local folk traditions and distinctive features of traditional dress. Historical objects and pictures illustrate rural life at the beginning of the 20th century. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Several craft activities are also held there. Every year, the Hagyományőrző Húsvét is also celebrated at the Tájház: the local Hagyományőrző Néptáncegyüttes brings the rural Easter custom of “Locsolkodás” to life. Another historical collection is housed at Kardok Háza: it includes 450 antique weapons dating from antiquity to the end of the 1848 War of Independence, including 130 swords. Visits are by prior arrangement. The Bűnbánó Szent Magdolna Church adds an architectural highlight to the village. The single-nave building combines late Baroque and early Neoclassical elements.
Nature trail and seasonal nature
The approximately 10-kilometre-long Várhegyi nature trail starts at the Nyugati Kapu Education and Visitor Centre in Felsőtárkány and follows the same route back. It leads through the natural and historical attractions of Várhegy.
A municipal description from 2021 gives the Felsőtárkány State Forest Railway route as 5 kilometres long, running through Bükki Nemzeti Park, and notes that it operates seasonally. The railway is currently out of service for renovation. Before making plans, check its current operating status and timetable with the operator.
Near Felsőtárkány is Vöröskő-forrás, an intermittent karst spring on the slope of Vöröskő in the Bükk Mountains. It is typically active for two to three months each year, usually after the snowmelt; its timing and activity also depend on precipitation. One route to the spring area takes the Felsőtárkány State Forest Railway to its terminus at Stimecz ház, followed by a walk through Vöröskő-völgy. Since the railway is currently out of service, check access before travelling.
A culinary highlight
The Felsőtárkány Rétesnapok is a two-day culture and gastronomy festival in Felsőtárkány. The traditional preparation of the local savoury cottage-cheese strudel was the focus of its 21st edition.
