Culture and History
Esterházy Castle was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style after the earthquakes of 1810 to 1814, based on plans by Charles Moreau. The castle formerly had a theatre hall, a chapel, a large library, an art gallery and a hunting hall. The well-maintained English landscape park of Esterházy Castle can be visited independently.
The listed Lőportorony is considered unique in Europe. It is accessible from public areas, can be visited year-round and admission is free. The Gróf-Merán-Fülöp Hunting and Forestry Museum provides insights into the everyday work of hunting and forestry professions through exhibits and artefacts.
The Báracházi Cave on Guba Hill has three openings and is significant from a cultural and historical perspective. Remains of the three-toed prehistoric horse (Hipparion), the sabre-toothed tiger and the Csákvár hyena were found in the Báracházi Cave.
Nature
The Geszner House is now the visitor centre of Vértes Nature Park; since 2000, the building has housed an exhibition about the world of Vértes. Geszner Park features a tactile plant garden with 32 species of aromatic culinary and medicinal plants, a lavender maze and butterfly gardens. Geszner Park can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on horseback.
A diverse range of plant and animal life can be observed in the meadow and forest around the Szent-Ferenc Chapel. On Csíkvarsai Meadow, visitors can see Hungarian Grey cattle, water buffalo, herds of donkeys and horses.
Trails and Landscape
The Panoráma educational trail is 4.6 kilometres long, has an elevation difference of 120 metres and passes through a variety of mosaic-like habitats characteristic of the southern Vértes.
