Balástya between Temple Architecture and Salt Lake

Balástya brings together a wide range of themes: a Hindu temple with an unusual architectural style, a history of windmills, salt meadows and a salt lake, as well as local festival traditions. The Hindu temple in Balástya was built in 2000 to plans by architect Szigeti Gyula. Its entrance porch recalls buildings of the Great Hungarian Plain and surrounds a temple tower decorated with bricks in the Orissa style. Two distinct architectural references thus come together in one building.

The Roman Catholic Church of St Anthony of Padua was built in 1903 by the city of Szeged in the eclectic style. The Kőrös-féle windmill tells a different story: construction began in 1996, and it was fully completed in 2000. The memorial to the victims of the Second World War commemorates the residents of Balástya who fell in the war. Together, these places point to building history and remembrance as different aspects of local history.

Salt Meadows, Birdlife and Lake

The Őszeszék salt meadow area provides a habitat for numerous protected species. Its most significant natural feature is the birdlife of the salt lake there. Müller-szék is also among the natural features listed in Balástya. These themes offer a distinctive perspective on the landscape, alongside its architectural and local histories.

Lake Őszeszéki was used as a fishing lake for a long time; it was about one kilometre long and covered 71 hectares. Today it is privately owned. Its former use, approximate dimensions and current ownership status are therefore all relevant to understanding the lake.

The Böllérfesztivál takes place every year with considerable community involvement. The programme for the XXIV Balástya Böllérfesztivál 2025 announced a demonstration of pig processing, as well as sausage stuffing and grilling; teams from the primary school were to take part in the sausage-making activities. Since 2000, the Falunapok, the Vegetable and Flower Festival, and the Lovasnapok have also been listed as community events.
