The Kétegyházi Román Tájház is also known as CASA MUZEU din Chitighaz. It is located at Kossuth u. 68; check the address before your visit. The collection in the residential building combines objects made by local self-sufficient households and craftspeople with household items from more distant regions. For anyone interested in everyday culture, a particular appeal lies in this combination of local craftsmanship and objects from different regions of origin.

The church can also be viewed from two perspectives: its architectural form is clearly described, while a local tradition offers a story about where the building materials came from. According to this tradition, the Romanian Orthodox Church was built with stones brought from Milova. The origin of the stones has been passed down as a local tradition, rather than as a verified construction detail. In this way, the concrete architecture stands alongside a story about the building’s history.

Castle Park and Cycling Path

The Andrássy-Almásy Castle Park surrounds the castle as an arboretum. Another, quite different aspect to consider when planning your trip is the cycling path built in Kétegyháza in 2021: it is 2.1 kilometres long and runs along Gyulai út and Toldi utca. If you include the route in your plans, check its current condition before setting out. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on cultural attractions or include cycling as well.

More Nature and Culture in Békés

In the Békés destination, the Körösvölgyi Animal Park in Szarvas offers a distinctive nature experience. Its 26-hectare woodland contains a walking path about two kilometres long, along which you will find bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail starts at the park’s jetty and follows a one-kilometre section of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow and its wildlife and plant life. The trail is aimed primarily at canoeists and rowboaters without an expert guide and can only be reached by canoe or boat. The two nature offerings in Békés are therefore quite distinct: a walking path through the woodland and a route accessible only by water.

At the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely near Dévaványa, visitors can see great bustards up close only here in Hungary. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy demonstrations can be requested. Anyone interested in one of these activities should therefore plan it on request and not assume it is available at all times.

The cultural attractions in Békés are also spread across different locations. In Békéscsaba, the collection at the Munkácsy Mihály Museum includes natural history, archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art-historical objects. In Gyula, the castle was built in the 15th century; today it is the only intact lowland brick castle in Central and Eastern Europe. Békés thus offers a choice of both diverse museum collections and a striking example of architectural history.
