The Castle as a Cultural Centrepiece

Siklós Castle is considered one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Since spring 2011, the renovated castle has welcomed visitors to a modern visitor centre. Modernisation of the museum wing also opened up the Gothic section, which had previously been inaccessible to visitors. The castle is therefore a tangible starting point for anyone who wants to discover Siklós not just as a place name, but also through its architectural history.

Nature Trail and Cycling Route

In the destination’s immediate surroundings, the 2.5-kilometre Csodabogyó nature trail starts at the foot of the Máriagyűd pilgrimage church. Along the route, information boards introduce visitors to the natural treasures of Mount Tenkes and the forest’s flora and fauna. The trail also passes a lookout tower and ends at a fire pit with a rest area. Its length and waypoints give the outing a clear structure, without requiring you to plan a longer route.

There is also a described route for a cycling trip: a developed cycle path starts on the outskirts of Siklós, at the roundabout on the bypass, and initially runs through the vineyards of Göntér Hill to Nagytótfalu. It continues through Kisharsány to Nagyharsány; from there, the paved cycle path carries on from the village cemetery to Villány. Olaszrizling and Choosing Accommodation

Olaszrizling is Siklós’s leading wine and also the grape variety most widely grown there. It gives the town a distinctive culinary theme beyond its castle. Another attraction is the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca in the wider destination of Baranya. It features an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm with hands-on farming activities and three themed nature trails. These introduce visitors to traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The farm area showcases native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs and Hucul horses, as well as old breeds of sheep and poultry. Baranya therefore offers cultural and nature experiences side by side, each with its own location and focus.
