Kastoria combines a varied lakeside landscape with churches, mansions and museums whose themes range from icons to the everyday life of an aristocratic family. Reeds and wet meadows line the shores of Lake Orestiada, while the town invites you to explore specific art-historical and architectural details. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether cultural sites or nature experiences will play a bigger part in your stay.

Icons, Mansions and Churches

The Byzantine Museum of Kastoria is located in Dexamenis Square and is a thematic museum dedicated to icons. Its permanent exhibition is divided into three sections: “Byzantine Kastoria,” “Post-Byzantine Kastoria” and “Post-Byzantine Art Workshops.” The sequence of themes already provides a clear guide to the museum visit: it takes you from Byzantine art through its post-Byzantine continuation to the art workshops.

Kastoria’s mansions also give the historic sites a tangible setting. The Tsiatsiapas Mansion stands in the Apozari district in the north of the town. In the traditional Doltso district, the Kastoria Folklore Museum is housed in the Nerantzis-Aivazis Mansion. Its exhibits illustrate the customs, celebrations and everyday life of an aristocratic family from Kastoria.

The Folklore Museum’s ground floor includes a stone-paved courtyard and adjoining rooms. Other exhibition details include a traditional kitchen, the hagiati, a well and a traditional wooden boat from Kastoria. One room shows everyday life in winter and summer. Together, these features offer different perspectives on living spaces, objects and the seasonal rhythms of daily life, rather than telling the story only through individual architectural styles.

Architecture and religious art can be examined more closely in several churches. The Church of the Archangels of the Metropolis in Kastoria is a small, three-aisled basilica with a barrel vault, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. “Three-aisled” describes the basilica’s division into three aisles; the barrel vault is another defining architectural feature. The Church of Agios Stefanos contains a depiction of the Last Judgment, which the regional tourism description calls the oldest in Greece. The original frescoes in the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Archontissa Theologina date from the late 15th century.

Another sacred site near Kastoria is the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa. It was originally known as the Monastery of Mesonisiotissa and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. These sites offer complementary facets of sacred history: a monastery’s dedication, the architecture of a basilica and the imagery found in churches.

Lake Orestiada: Lakeside Nature and Freshwater Species

Reed beds and small wet meadows stretch along the shore of Lake Kastoria, with a lakeside forest at its northwestern edge. These habitats give the lake a distinct natural character alongside the town’s cultural sites. If you enjoy comparing art and nature when planning a trip, you can weigh these themes as two different focuses for your stay.

The lake is an important breeding ground for many species. It also serves as a feeding ground for the two pelican species that breed at nearby Lake Mikri Prespa. The regional tourism description also describes the birds at Lake Kastoria: because of continuous activity along the shore, they are said to be accustomed to people’s presence and can be observed from an unusually short distance.

The Kastoria Aquarium displays 56 freshwater fish species, mostly native and endemic species of Lake Orestiada. This offers a different way to explore the lake’s species than its lakeside habitats. For travellers particularly interested in bodies of water and their wildlife, the lakeside landscape and the aquarium’s fish species provide two specific themes to help guide their choice of focus.

The variety of places to visit makes Kastoria appealing for both a culture-oriented and a nature-focused stay, without requiring you to choose just one perspective. If you mainly want to explore icons, frescoes, churches and historic homes, you can give these themes more weight when looking for a holiday apartment. If your focus is more on Lake Orestiada, its lakeside habitats and freshwater species, that offers another useful starting point for your choice. The key is which of these aspects you would like to make the focus of your stay.
