Grevena: Nature, Culture and Mountain Villages
Accommodation in Grevena
Grevena combines mountain landscapes and forests with villages, monasteries and special discoveries along the way. The traditional Vlach villages and Kupatsochoria are scattered among mountain slopes, forests and rivers and attract visitors in summer. A trip through the area can therefore combine experiences in nature with insights into history and regional traditions.
Forests, Lakes and Waterfalls
Part of the Northern Pindos National Park, including Valia Kalda, extends across the Grevena region. At the heart of the park lies the valley of the same name, with diverse flora and abundant wildlife. Valia Kalda is home to brown bears and other species of Greek wildlife; it is suitable for hiking, photography and nature-focused stays. Those who want to spend most of their days outdoors will find a different focus here than on a visit to historical sites and museums.
At the heart of Valia Kalda are the Flegga Dragon Lakes: two twin lakes at an elevation of about 1,950 metres. They can only be reached via mountain hiking trails. This restriction is part of choosing the destination: the lakes are a hiking destination, not a place to visit without walking. The elevation is an approximate guide.
Near Mesolouri, a well-maintained paved path, about 600 metres long, leads from the bridge to three successive waterfalls. They are 3, 2.5 and 5 metres high. The waterfalls form small natural pools, where swimming is possible in the cold water. Planning this excursion lets you combine a walk to several waterfalls with time by the water.
Villages, Buildings and History
Samarina has two traditional water-powered fulling mills, which were used to wash carpets, clothes and blankets. They offer a tangible insight into everyday practices of the past. The monasteries also preserve tangible traces of history: the Church of Saint Nicholas at Perivoli Monastery was built in 1803; today, only its katholikon remains. The Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Spilaio was founded in 1633 and preserves frescoes dating from the time of its foundation.
On Kastri Hill is the excavated acropolis of a previously unknown ancient city of the Tymphaioi. Most of the visible remains date from the late 4th to the middle of the 2nd century BC. Another structure tells the story of regional craftsmanship: the Aziz Aga Bridge is a three-arched stone bridge over the Venetikos River near the village of Trikomo. Its central, slightly elliptical arch has a span of 28 metres and is considered the largest in Macedonia and one of the largest in all of Greece.
Museums and Mushroom Traditions
The Natural History Museum in Mylia houses more than 2,000 fossils and finds from the Grevena area. Its exhibits include 5.02-metre-long tusks, listed in the Guinness Book of Records. The Mushroom Museum in Lavda is housed in a traditional stone building and presents the mushroom heritage of the Grevena region. It displays wild, fresh and dried mushrooms, as well as models that resemble small patches of forest.
The Mushroom Park on the northeastern edge of Grevena also explores the theme: it has paths, mushroom-themed wood carvings and play areas for families and children. The Panhellenic Mushroom Festival is held there every year. For families, the park offers a different focus for a visit than the mountain hiking trails or historical buildings.
Regional Cuisine and Choosing Accommodation
Cheese-making is a living tradition in the mountainous Grevena region, using local goat’s and sheep’s milk. Varieties include Anevato, Batzos, Feta, Kasseri and Manouri. Those interested in regional food culture will find another aspect that enriches a trip beyond landscapes and history.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Grevena, it helps to first consider which experiences you want to prioritise: Valia Kalda and the Flegga Dragon Lakes offer nature and mountain hikes, while monasteries, ancient remains and museums provide cultural and historical discoveries. The Vasilitsa National Ski Centre is also located nearby, at an elevation of 1,642 to 2,110 metres. It has 18 pistes with a total length of 22 kilometres. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your trip and, in turn, which area to search for a holiday apartment, without treating the various destinations as a single place to visit.
