Lofos combines the character of a mountain village with a distinctive tower, a village church, and a nearby chapel. At its centre stands “το αρχοντικό του πασά”; Lofos also has local historical traditions. When deciding where to travel, the first question is whether a mountain village with these cultural connections suits what you want to discover on your trip.

Elevation and orientation

Lofos (Vrosthena) is at an elevation of 800 metres. The village is 22 kilometres from Diakopto and lies on the road towards Mega Spilaio and Kalavryta. Its elevation places the village in the mountains; the distance and direction of the road provide another way to get your bearings. If you are considering Lofos as a destination, you can weigh these geographical details against your interest in a mountain village.

Tower, church, and chapel

The large tower in the centre is called “το αρχοντικό του πασά”. According to a local account, the Venetians may have begun its construction and the Turks completed it. The village church is dedicated to Saint George. Together with the tower, it provides another specific landmark for anyone interested in local buildings and their religious character.

The old chapel dedicated to the Panagia is a short distance from Lofos. According to tradition, monks set out from there to build Mega Spilaio. The chapel is also believed to have probably been built over an ancient temple. Two different accounts thus converge on this chapel: a local tradition about the founding of Mega Spilaio and the cautious suggestion that the site has an older history.

Historical connections

A local account records Lofos (Vrosthena) in the 1690 Venetian cadastre of Vostitsa under the names “Βρεστενα” and “Βρώστενα”, as a district of what was then Diakopto. For 1821, a local account names Christodoulos Chalamis as a local notable and fighter who lived in Lofos. His son Andreas took part in the Vostitsa assembly in January of that same year. The local account places another episode in the Vouraikos Gorge in 1827: the local fighter Koumoutsos attacked Egyptians there. The names and dates lead from a historical place name to individual people and then to an account from the gorge. For families who enjoy discovering local history together, such details can provide conversation starters.

A dated festival

On 26 July 2025 at 10 p.m., the 16th Γιορτή Προβατίνας took place in Vrosthena’s square. It was organised by the association “Οι Φίλοι της Βρώσθενας”. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your planned stay.

Lofos as a place to stay

When searching for a holiday apartment, consider Lofos if you are looking for a mountain village with a named tower, religious connections, and historical traditions as the focus of your stay. Think about whether the village’s character and history match what you have in mind, or whether you would prefer to plan your trip around a specific festival. In the latter case, check the event date against your travel dates.
