Fanes: Beach, Chapel and Wine Harvest Festival
Accommodation in Fanes
Fanes combines a long sandy beach with religious tradition and agricultural heritage. So when looking for a holiday apartment, the coast is not the only point of interest: the chapel celebration and the wine harvest festival also give the place distinct reasons to visit. Consider whether your stay will focus mainly on the beach, water sports or attending a festival. These different interests can help you assess Fanes as a holiday destination before choosing your accommodation.
Sandy Beach and Water Sports
A long sandy beach stretches along the west side of Fanes; at one end is a small, picturesque fishing harbour. The beach is secluded, the water is shallow, and tamarisk trees provide shade. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are very popular at the beach, and there are also two schools for both sports. Thus, shallow water and natural shade are coastal features alongside an explicitly active water-sports scene. If one of the schools is important to your plans, check in advance what is currently available. There are no umbrellas or sun loungers at the beach. If these matter to you, ask locally before planning your beach day.
Chapel and Feast Day
The Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Fanes is located on the Ialysos–Kattavia provincial road. It is a small, single-nave building with a barrel vault. “Single-nave” means that it has one nave; a barrel vault is a lengthwise, arch-shaped ceiling. These definitions make the architectural terms easy to understand without detracting from the character of the small building. Every year, pilgrims from across the island come to the chapel celebration. Its feast day is 6 August; the festival takes place on the eve. Architecture and religious tradition come together here: the building is a tangible place, while the celebration is a recurring event in the annual calendar.
Agricultural Heritage and the Grape Harvest
Agricultural heritage also has a tangible connection to Fanes: the former C.A.I.R. factory has been converted into a centre for agricultural heritage. The Fanes wine harvest festival is held every year in September at the former factory, and visitors can take part in grape stomping. Unlike the chapel celebration, the focus here is on the grape harvest, and taking part in the stomping is part of the festival. This gives you a clear distinction when planning dates: the chapel festival takes place on 6 August and its eve, while the wine harvest festival is held in September.
Archaeological Site South of Fanes
A few kilometres south of Fanes are the archaeological site of Ancient Kameiros and its associated harbour. This nearby point of interest adds an archaeological dimension to Fanes’ coastal features and festival traditions. When choosing your holiday apartment, it may be helpful to weigh up these different points of interest: the beach and water sports, the celebrations in Fanes or the archaeological surroundings south of the village.
