Pachena reveals itself at Páchaina Beach, with its wide stretch of sand and a coastline offering more than one kind of scenery. The left-hand section of the beach has small sandy coves formed by rocks jutting out into the sea. A few tamarisk trees add to the landscape, while the Glaronisia Islands can be seen across the water from the beach. Sand, rock formations, trees and island views are all part of what makes this place distinctive.

Beach and Hiking Route in Pachena

The wide sandy beach and the small coves offer different highlights within the same coastal landscape. Anyone choosing a destination with a particular focus on beach scenery and sea views will find both here: a long stretch of sand and smaller coves formed by rocks. The tamarisk trees and the Glaronisia Islands opposite add to this impression, without reducing the beach’s character to a single feature.

Pachena is also worth considering for hiking: Hiking Route 7 passes through Páchaina, among other places. This adds a second holiday option alongside the beach. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the coastal landscape or hiking—or both—will shape your stay.

Milos: Landscapes, History and Activities

The wider destination of Milos offers great landscape variety: the island has more than 75 beaches, both large and small. Its volcanic origins have shaped beaches and coves with white, red, yellow and black rocks. Sarakiniko offers a striking contrast, with entirely white volcanic rock formations, deep blue water and a small natural harbour enclosed by rocks. These examples describe Milos as a whole, not Páchaina Beach.

Milos’s mining history is also part of its cultural heritage. Mining activity began there during the Neolithic period, around 8000 BC, with the extraction and trade of obsidian. The Milos Mining Museum presents the island’s distinctive geology and mining history through objects, photographs and pictures. Visitors can explore the museum independently using an audio guide system, available in Greek, English, French, German and Italian.

Other historical attractions offer different perspectives. Following restoration work, the ancient theatre of Milos was prepared to accommodate around 700 spectators in July 2016. The Archaeological Museum of Melos has three rooms for its permanent exhibition, as well as a veranda and an open courtyard. If you would like to spend some of your holiday away from the beach, you can take these cultural attractions into account when choosing what to focus on.

Water Activities and Island Cuisine

One of Milos’s distinctive waterside locations is Papafragas Cave, where visitors can swim in turquoise water among grey and white rocks that open onto the sea. Papikinou is another option for travellers with children. The water gradually deepens there, the waves are among the calmest on the island, and the beach is considered suitable for children. Both descriptions refer to Milos and are not features of Páchaina Beach.

Guided day trips by canoe and kayak are available on Milos from April to October. Boat trips around the island can reach beaches that are inaccessible from land and explore caves. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore help to decide what you want to focus on: Pachena combines the beach with a connection to Hiking Route 7, while a broader look at Milos also opens up cultural and water-based activities.

Milos also has its own culinary speciality: Skoufomakarono is a traditional pasta dish with Myzithra cheese and browned butter, served in tavernas and at festivals on the island. This puts Pachena’s beach landscape within the context of a trip that can also include Milos’s history, activities and local cuisine, depending on your interests.
