On Kos, you can spend active days in many different ways: cycling along flat or steep routes, walking on the island’s highest mountain, or enjoying water sports and observing nature. You can also sample local specialities closely connected to their production on the island. Which of these aspects appeals to you most may also shape your choice of holiday destination and accommodation.

Cycling on flat and steep routes

The cycling routes on Kos vary considerably in their terrain. There are completely flat, hilly and mixed routes, as well as unpaved and steep ones. When planning your rides, you can focus on the type of route you prefer; these different options should not be viewed as a single, uniform offering. The municipal tourism portal presents ten cycling routes on the island. If cycling is at the heart of your trip, you can use this selection as a guide for your own planning and compare the route profiles with the interests of your fellow travellers.

Hiking on Mount Dikeos, water sports and nature

At 846 metres, Mount Dikeos is the highest mountain on Kos. A well-maintained, marked hiking trail starts in Zia. The mountain’s elevation and the trail described give the island a mountainous side, too; you can plan a hike as a distinct experience alongside the cycling routes.

Water-based leisure activities are another part of what the island has to offer: facilities for water sports and similar activities are available at almost every beach. All kinds of water sports are available in the Psalidi area. If water activities are important to your trip, you can include Psalidi in your plans.

The Psalidi wetland offers another perspective on Kos. It is a seasonal refuge for migratory birds and is characterised by lush vegetation. The paths provided are used for wildlife observation. The area is recognised as a protected area in Greece, the Agios Fokas Wildlife Refuge; it bears the SPA designation GR4210027 for the protection of its biodiversity. Those interested in nature and birdwatching will find a different focus here than in sporting activities.

Discover honey and Krasotyri

Local production is also among the special experiences on Kos. At apiaries that welcome visitors, you can taste honey and learn about the production process first-hand. This way, the focus is not only on the finished product, but also on how it is made. Another speciality is Kos Krasotyri: this white cheese made from sheep’s or goat’s milk is protected as a PDO and matures for at least one month in grape marc. Its protected origin, types of milk and maturation process make it a distinctive regional speciality. If you would like to include food and local products in your trip, beekeeping and cheese offer two specific and different ways to do so.

Choosing a place to stay and getting around

Local KTEL buses run from every settlement on Kos, with numerous regular services to Kos Town. You can take these bus connections into account when choosing a holiday destination, especially if you plan to visit Kos Town. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider not only the experiences you are looking for, but also how important bus connections are for getting around.
