Fri is the capital and harbor of Kasos. Bouka, an old pirate anchorage with colorful fishing boats, is located in the town. Alongside the harbor and coast, several cultural sites shape the character of the main town. If you are looking for a vacation rental in Fri, this town profile offers a practical starting point: you can decide whether to focus your trip more on coastal scenery or history.

Harbor scenery and Kofteri

The harbor at Bouka serves as a mooring place for small boats; colorful little fishing boats lie there. Kofteri is in the center of Fry, right next to the harbor. The organized sandy and pebbly beach has white pebbles and clear turquoise water; tamarisk trees provide shade. This means Fri has two distinct coastal scenes side by side: the harbor with its boats and the beach with its water and shade-giving trees. Kofteri combines these beach features with its location by the harbor, while Bouka, as an old anchorage, adds to the town’s maritime character.

Archaeological finds and island history

The Archaeological Collection of Kasos is located in Fry and includes finds dating from prehistoric to early Christian times. The collection includes vases, coins and architectural elements from Ellinokamara Cave, Hellenistic inscribed stone tablets from Poli, and Minoan finds from Helatros. One exhibition covers the island’s participation in the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and the Holocaust of 1824; a small collection complements these topics with history and folklore. The basement of the building houses the Kassiotiko Spiti, with household objects used in earlier times and weapons that have been found. For current visitor information, check the official museum website.

The center and surroundings of Bouka also offer their own historical highlights. The Heroes’ Monument 1824 stands in the center of Fry, just before Bouka. It features two anchors and four cannons and commemorates the island’s fighters. The church of Agios Spyridon rises above Bouka. Its furnishings include a carved wooden iconostasis from 1866. The two sites emphasize different things: the monument commemorates the fighters, while the dated iconostasis is a specific example of church woodcarving.

Library and cultural perspectives

The N. G. Mavris Municipal Library is located in a neoclassical building in Fry. It contains around 4,000 titles and has a room for cultural events. Alongside the archaeological collection, it offers another view of the main town’s cultural life: the library brings together a collection of books and an events space, while the collection encompasses finds, historical themes and folklore. The two institutions offer different points of connection for anyone interested in the culture and history of Kasos.
