Marathópolis combines a waterfront promenade lined with fish tavernas and cafés with a coastal landscape in which the nearby island of Proti plays a special role. The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour stands in the town; ancient finds at the port of Dialiskari tell of a long history. So, alongside its beaches, there are reasons to explore the town and its surroundings.

Promenade and Port Town

Marathópolis serves as the port for the town of Gargaliani. Fish tavernas and cafés along the waterfront promenade give the town its own maritime character. If your holiday plans include spending time by the water and eating at local establishments, you can take this aspect of the town into account. The promenade offers a different focus from the island and beach attractions around Proti.

Proti: Breakwater, Shipwreck and Acropolis

The nearby island of Proti lies opposite Marathópolis and serves as a natural breakwater. It is two nautical miles from the port of Marathos. Vourlia Beach is on Proti and can only be reached by boat from Marathópolis. In the shallow water lies the wreck of a merchant ship that was accidentally bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. The wreck shelters abundant marine life and is considered a snorkelling attraction.

The island also has a long history: the ruins of a Mycenaean acropolis lie at its southern tip, and some sections of wall are still standing. A sea kayaking tour in the Trifylia region includes a visit to Proti after exploring beaches on the Ionian Sea. On Proti, nature, archaeological traces and experiences on the water come together; Vourlia Beach can only be reached by boat from Marathópolis.

Beaches in the Area

Nearby beaches include Lagouvardos, Ai-Giannakis, Vromoneri and Chrysi Akti, also known as Mati. The comparison with Vourlia starts with their location: these four beaches are considered nearby, while Vourlia is on Proti and can only be reached by boat from Marathópolis. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between beaches in the immediate area and the island experience.

Church, August Festivals and Ancient Finds

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is in Marathópolis. Two local festivals take place in August: the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour is celebrated on 6 August, and the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God on 15 August. If a festival date is important to your trip, check the latest event information in advance.

For a glimpse into the area’s archaeological history, visit the nearby port of Dialiskari, two kilometres from Marathópolis. Significant ancient finds, mainly from the Roman period, were uncovered there in the 1920s and 1930s. These finds led to Dialiskari being identified with ancient Erana. Its precise distance and discovery history make Dialiskari a distinct historical point of interest alongside the remains on Proti.
