Sofiana lies at an altitude of 850 metres on the slopes of the Mavro Mountains, also known as Mavriorous. Numerous springs, old wells with running water, and historic churches give the village a distinct character. A mountain route passes through Sofiana, and the village’s history includes both Venetian and Ottoman-era references. If you are looking for a holiday rental in a mountain setting with local history, Sofiana offers several clear points of interest.

Mountain Setting, Springs, and Wells

Greenery and numerous springs characterize the slopes; the altitude of 850 metres clearly establishes Sofiana’s mountain setting. The Mavro Mountains are also known as Mavriorous. The old wells add another dimension: they are located in the village and have running water. The springs are part of the landscape, while the wells are a feature within Sofiana. When choosing your destination, you can therefore take both the mountain surroundings and the village itself into account.

Mountain Route and How to Get There

The fifth mountain route in the Municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostina passes through Gelini, Sofiana, and Rethi. This makes Sofiana part of a route that spans several villages. The indicated route for reaching Sofiana is the road from Xylokastro to Trikala; follow the signposts. The route description and the road directions answer different planning questions: one gives the route through Gelini and Rethi, while the other points the way to Sofiana. As road conditions can change, check local conditions before you travel.

Local History and Churches

As early as 1700, during Venetian rule, Sofiana was a settlement belonging to present-day Gelini. One account passed down by residents concerns the former Church of Agios Georgios: during the Ottoman period, it stood in a different location, had steps, and was an ancient structure. This former building no longer exists. The village’s history thus brings together a dated record of a settlement and a story passed down by residents.

The history of the churches and chapels also includes specific connections to individuals and the village. The Church of Agioi Anargyroi was built on the initiative of the teacher Soufras. The Chapel of Agia Paraskevi was completely renovated in the early 1990s, with the village covering the cost. These represent two distinct aspects of local history: an individual’s initiative in building a church and a community-funded renovation.

The Sofiana Cultural Association organizes village festivals. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates in advance. Together with the historical associations of the church and chapel, the festivals provide another reason to take Sofiana’s culture into account when choosing your destination.
