Paralia Irion can be explored through two distinct themes: the beach in the village and historical remains in the surrounding area. Paralia Irion beach consists of sand as well as fine and coarse pebbles; ancient quarrying remains have been preserved nearby, and a small fortification from the Hellenistic period can be seen north of the Iria plain. When planning your holiday, you can consider the village’s beach character and the history of the surrounding area as separate focal points.

Iria and its two settlement areas

The settlement of Iria is divided into “Πάνω Χωριό Ιρίων” and “Παραλία Ιρίων”. This means that Paralía Iríon can be identified as one of the two named settlement areas. This distinction provides orientation if you want to focus specifically on the beach area or consider Iria as a whole.

A beach of sand and pebbles

Paralía Iríon beach consists of sand as well as fine and coarse pebbles. In most places, the sandy seabed is shallow; the beach is considered ideal for families with children. The nature of the shore, the seabed, and its suitability for families are therefore specific features to consider together. If the beach environment is important to you when planning your holiday, you can take these qualities into account in your decision.

Quarrying traces in the surrounding area

Remains of ancient quarrying have been preserved nearby. They lie east of the Church of Agios Nikolaos, to the left of the road that climbs from the Iria plain towards Epidauria. Tool marks left by ancient quarry workers can still be seen in the hard grey limestone. The stone appears to have served as a raw material for architectural components since at least Roman times. Locals call the quarry site Kranidóstrata, and it is the only surviving trace of the route of the old road towards southern Argolida. Thus, the visible traces of stoneworking at this site are linked to an indication of the former road route.

A fortification from the Hellenistic period

Another historical feature is a small fortification from the Hellenistic period. It can be seen at the top of a rocky hill at the foot of the mountain range north of the Iria plain. Together with the quarrying traces, it offers a different perspective on the surrounding area: traces of working stone stand alongside a fortified site. The two remains provide different points of interest for those curious about the past.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can give different weight to the beach and the historical themes. The beach is part of Paralía Iríon, while the quarry remains and the fortification are located in the surrounding area. Consider whether the beach itself is the main factor in your holiday plans, or whether you are also interested in the ancient traces in the surrounding area.
