Vastas combines a striking position at altitude with a history that can be explored through its church and watermills. The village lies on a gentle terrace at an altitude of 860 m and was formerly called Μπάστας. The altitude provides a precise point of reference, while the terrace describes the village’s setting. There is also a route to the summit of Τετράζιο and the Arcadian Trails circular route, whose two sections meet in Vastas. During your stay, you can therefore combine cultural and historical discoveries with practical tour planning.

Church and village history

Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου is the parish church of Vastas, framed by a bell tower. Construction began in 1911; the tower was built in 1912, the church was completed in 1938 and it was restored in 2011. The bell tower was built a year after construction began and 26 years before the church was completed; the restoration was a further, much later milestone. Nearby is the Byzantine church Αγία Θεοδώρα, considered the most important ecclesiastical monument in the Vastas area. The parish church can be placed in context through its construction timeline, while Αγία Θεοδώρα is distinguished by its standing in the area.

Water and the history of the mills

In the past, grain was milled in three watermills in Vastas. The Λετζέρης mill was powered by water from Κρύα Βρύση, while Λούφας and Χοντρός were fed by the spring Αγία Θεοδώρα. Mill channels ran along both sides of the Χάραδρος. These mills reveal a different aspect of the village’s history from its churches: the focus here is on grain processing and water management. The name Χοντρός also appears at a renovated mill near Αγία Θεοδώρα. It is in the courtyard of the “Νερόμυλος του Νικόλα” taverna and is considered operational. Ask about the current situation before visiting.

Routes with different destinations

The Vástas–Προφήτης Ηλίας route leads to the summit of Τετράζιο and follows an unpaved path. Check local conditions before setting out. Vastas is also the meeting point of the Λύκαιο–Βάστας and Βάστας–Ίσαρης sections of the Arcadian Trails circular route. These offer two different ways to plan your trip: the route to Τετράζιο has a summit as its destination, while two named sections of a circular route meet in Vastas. This lets you distinguish between a specific summit objective and the sections of a circular route.
