Armenistís is best known for its two long sandy beaches, Livadi and Messakti. The village also has a small, picturesque cove. Together, these coastal spots give a clear impression of what makes Armenistís a distinctive place to stay by the sea: long sandy beaches and a cove that adds its own character.

Beach, Village Life and Getting Around

Armenistís also has a pedestrian area with tourist shops. When planning your holiday, the shops in the village offer another point of reference alongside the beaches. Armenistís Beach is accessible from the island’s main road by private car, taxi or scheduled bus. As transport options can change, it is best to check connections locally. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether beach days or village life and its shops will be more important to your plans.

Nearby is Messakti Beach, where the small Myrsonas River flows into the sea. Along the way, it has formed a green wetland. This stretch of coast brings a sandy beach and river landscape together, offering a different view from the long sandy coastline alone.

Hiking Trails and Island Nature

A route description dated 16 May 2018 places the start of the Raches circular trail just outside Armenistís, beyond the “Pleiades” club. It gives the route’s length as 25 kilometres and describes it as easy. Small red footprints mark the trail, which crosses other paths along the way. For your planning, it is worth considering the length and stated difficulty separately: at 25 kilometres, the distance is an important factor in deciding whether the loop fits into your hiking day. On Ikaria, a hiking trail also passes through the Halari Gorge.

Ikaria’s landscape also offers points of interest to help with travel planning. The Randi Forest, also known as Gaia, lies in the centre of the island, west of the Atheras range, and covers about 16 square kilometres. Ikaria’s protected areas are part of the Natura 2000 network. Alongside the beaches of Armenistís, Ikaria’s natural attractions include the Randi Forest and the protected areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network.

Ikaria: History, Festivals and Flavours

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Kirykos is housed in a neoclassical building that once served as the local secondary school and was later designated a protected monument. Its finds tell the story of Ikaria and its inhabitants from the Neolithic period, dated to 6800–3800 BC, through to Roman times. A visit to the museum therefore connects the island’s history with a building that has itself had earlier uses and was later granted protected status.

Other places on Ikaria highlight different aspects of its history: the ruins of Oinoe, the island’s ancient capital, lie in the area of present-day Kampos. East of the present-day village of Therma are the ruins of the ancient spa town of Thermae. The ancient tower of Drakano stands in the area of Faros (Fanari), at the eastern end of Ikaria.

Ikaria’s villages celebrate religious holidays and some non-religious festivities throughout the year; dates may vary. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check its date. Regional wines are another part of the island’s appeal: visitors can sample a range of Ikarian wines and learn more about how they are made at four wineries. Check availability before visiting. Kolokasi (Colocasia esculenta) is a rare plant in Greece, found only on Ikaria.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Armenistís, you can set your own priorities: should the two long sandy beaches define your stay, are the shops in the pedestrian area an important point of reference, or would you also like to include Ikaria’s cultural and natural attractions in your travel plans? Your answers can help you choose a destination based on the experiences that interest you.
