Alexandros: Village History, Weaving and Hiking
Accommodation in Alexandros
Alexandros brings together the history of a mountain village, hiking trails, weaving courses and a church feast day. This lets you give different weight to local history, outdoor activity and crafts when planning your holiday. The specific routes and experiences give your stay its own focus, rather than reducing Alexandros to a single activity.
From Mountain Village to Coastal Area
Many years ago, the residents of Alexandros, a village on Mount Skaros, moved to the coastal area of Nikiana for reasons of livelihood and development. This move brings together two different settlements in the history of Alexandros: the former mountain settlement and the coastal area where its residents moved. When choosing a focus for your holiday, this offers a concrete perspective on the village’s development without reducing its history to a single event.
Hiking Around Alexandros
The “The Three Villages” hiking trail runs around the three villages of Alexandros. It mostly follows quiet roads and unpaved paths; a short section of the Monopati climbs over rocky ground. The hike takes about an hour, not including breaks. You can therefore allow extra time for breaks when planning your day.
Green circular markers with arrows indicate the route. A section of the route through the trees follows the same path as another trail, marked red-orange on the rocks. As trail markers can change, check them on site.
Another self-guided trail is called “Around Skaros Mountain.” It runs around the three villages of Alexandros, is rated moderate and takes two hours. For planning your time, this gives you two different estimates: about an hour, not including breaks, for “The Three Villages” and two hours for “Around Skaros Mountain.” For the first trail, the surface and short climb over rocky ground are described; for the second, the difficulty is explicitly rated moderate.
Weaving Courses and Agios Dimitrios
The old schoolhouse in Alexandros is a venue for weaving courses. The courses last three hours. If you would like to take part, check the current participation options before visiting. Weaving offers a different focus from the hiking trails: here, a craft and a clearly defined block of time take centre stage instead of a route.
The church of Agios Dimitrios in Alexandros contains icons. Visits are subject to conditions; check the current options locally before visiting. On the feast day of Agios Dimitrios at Easter, the church is filled with hundreds of people. If you would like to plan your trip around this feast day, check the exact dates in advance.
Landscape and History Nearby
The Skaros Forest lies close to Alexandros. It has oak trees and rock formations, as well as views of the Prigiponisia islets. The surrounding area adds a landscape to the hiking trails that differs from the roads and unpaved paths along the routes.
A cave between Nikiana and Alexandros is also nearby. There, three Holy Fathers founded the first Christian hermitage on Lefkada in 325. Alexandros was probably named after one of them. The cave is between the two places, not within Alexandros. If you are interested in local and church history, this historical connection complements the icons in Agios Dimitrios with another story, set in a separate location.
Choosing a Focus for Your Holiday
When looking for a holiday apartment in Alexandros, you can start by thinking about the rhythm you want for your days: would you like to set aside time for hikes with different stated durations, take a three-hour weaving course, or give special attention to the Easter feast day?
