Amfithea, also known as Strouni, combines its location on Lake Pamvotida with nature, water skiing and a historic building. Visitors can learn about the area's habitats, vegetation and flora. The water-skiing channel and the training centre of the Ski Pamvotis sports club add an active dimension; the former Koutseki municipal school provides a historical focal point. When looking for a holiday apartment, it may therefore help to consider whether the lakeside landscape, water sports or local history will play the biggest part in your decision.

On the shore of Lake Pamvotida

Amfithea lies on the lakeshore. The opportunity to learn about the area's habitats, vegetation and flora makes the landscape a tangible part of the local setting. Ioannina Island lies in the northwestern part of Lake Pamvotida, opposite the settlement of Amfithea. The lakeshore and the island are therefore distinct, clearly identified points of reference around the lake.

Water skiing in Amfithea

A water-skiing channel operates in Amfithea. The Ski Pamvotis sports club also runs a training centre there, with a slalom course and a jump ramp. From April to the end of October, water-skiing lessons are offered to beginners of all ages. For a specific date within this period, confirm current availability with the club. According to tourism-related information, the channel hosts international-level competitions. Water sports are therefore a distinct focus of the area, alongside the lakeside landscape and its plant life.

Koutseki: a historical landmark

The former “Koutseki” municipal school was built in 1886 and is designated as a protected monument. The year it was built gives this local landmark a specific historical context. Alongside water sports and the lakeshore, Koutseki offers a different way to explore Amfithea, with local architectural history taking centre stage.

Location and choosing a holiday destination

Amfithea is two kilometres from Perama and 15 minutes from the centre of Ioannina. Frequent city transport connections are also reported for the area. When choosing a holiday apartment, these points of reference can be considered alongside your interests: Amfithea offers the described connections to the lakeshore, flora and water skiing, while Ioannina has a different focus. The distance to Perama and the journey time to the city centre are different types of guidance. For specific days of travel, it is worth checking the timetable.

More topics in the wider Ioannina destination

The wider Ioannina destination also has its own nature and culture attractions. The Lake Pamvotida Information Centre is on Ioannina Island, in a traditional stone building protected as a monument. It presents information about the lake's main plants, as well as the fish, birds, amphibians and mammals that live there. Check the centre's current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Ioannina Island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece. Its village is designated as a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates from the 16th century. Two monasteries were founded on the island during the Byzantine period: the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Philanthropenon, also known as Spanou, and the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Strategopoulou, also known as Diliou. This local and architectural history offers a different focus from Amfithea's landscape and water-sports activities.

In Ioannina, the Byzantine Museum is located inside the castle, in the southeastern citadel of Itch Kale. It displays silverware in the so-called Treasury at the centre of the citadel, as well as an exhibition on the city's history in the Fethiye Mosque. The Silversmithing Museum is located in the western bastion tower of the castle's northeastern citadel, Its Kale; visitors can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects there. Ioannina is also home to the visitor and reception centre of Perama Cave, which includes audiovisual materials and rare palaeontological finds.
