Angelochori brings together the coast, a nearby lagoon landscape and an unusual lighthouse history. From the beach, the view stretches as far as Thessaloniki and Mount Olympus; swimming and water sports are among the activities available along the adjoining coast. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, consider which aspect of the area you would like to shape your stay: nature watching, time by the water or historical discoveries.

Lagoon, Birdlife and Salt Pans

Angelochori Lagoon lies about 1 kilometre southwest of the village, covers 3,772 acres and is roughly square in shape. Two hundred bird species have been observed in the lagoon’s protected area. It also has ten different habitat types, equivalent to 11.2 percent of the habitat types found in Greece. This makes the lagoon a nature destination in its own right, alongside the coastal experiences.

A salt pan in the northern part of the lagoon has been in operation since at least 1902 and produces salt. Reeds, broom, rushes and asphodels grow in the ditch around the salt pan. Birds, habitats, plants and salt production offer different ways to experience this landscape. They can also provide families with an engaging topic of conversation, without limiting a visit to just one aspect of nature.

Beach, Coves and Water Sports

Angelochori’s beach is home to a harbour where coastal fishing boats are moored; their presence may vary. From the beach, you can see Thessaloniki and Mount Olympus. Swimming is possible along the adjoining coast, and the climatic conditions are favourable for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Some small coves along the coast towards Thessaloniki can be reached by car; conditions may vary. There are several coastal experiences to choose from: the beach with its two distant views, swimming and wind-dependent sports, or a trip to one of the coves.

Businesses in the Angelochori area offer water sports services and rent the necessary equipment. If you want to make firm plans to use one of these services, it is best to check availability for your travel dates in advance. The climatic conditions are favourable for kitesurfing and windsurfing, but this does not replace checking which specific services will be available during your stay. Local tavernas are a good place to enjoy seafood and other dishes.

Lighthouse History and Summer Events

Angelochori Lighthouse joined the Greek lighthouse network in 1913. During the German occupation, it was converted into a machine-gun post because of its strategic location. Of the five concrete cannons erected there, one remains to this day. This sequence of events makes the lighthouse a distinctive historical feature of the area: its story spans its incorporation into the lighthouse network and the military changes made during the occupation.

The House of the Keeper of Aliki is also a cultural venue: musical and other artistic events are held there on summer evenings. If you would like to include an evening like this in your plans, check the event dates in advance. When choosing a holiday apartment in Angelochori, it helps to start by deciding what matters most to you: the coast and water sports, the nearby lagoon or the lighthouse’s history each suggest a different kind of stay. This helps you tailor your search to the interests of your travel group, without assuming there is just one way to holiday.
