Pella brings together archaeological remains, a traditional mountain settlement and a nearby walking route. This gives you different options to focus on when planning your trip: the ancient city and its mosaics, Kromni’s architectural history or a route with named stages and estimated times. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these interests you most and how you would like to spend your days.

Ancient Pella: Residential Quarter, Agora and Mosaics

During the height of Alexander the Great’s reign, ancient Pella was the capital of the ancient Macedonian state. The archaeological site includes part of the ancient residential quarter, with the Houses of Dionysus, Helen, the Wall Plasters and Poseidon, as well as part of the Agora. The houses’ elaborate mosaic floors depict scenes from Greek mythology and nature.

The mosaics give you specific motifs to look out for during your visit; the Agora and residential quarter also point to different areas of the ancient site. If you’re travelling with children, the scenes can be a vivid starting point for conversation. Pella’s former role as a capital places these details in a broader historical context.

Kromni: Stone Houses and Mountain History

Kromni is the traditional settlement of the Municipality of Pella and lies at an elevation of 580 metres. Its uninhabited stone houses preserve traces of its history. A forest road on Mount Paiko leads to the mountain settlement. The Church of Saint Nicholas is another specific historical landmark: it dates to 1858. Together, the houses and church reveal different aspects of the settlement’s architectural history, while Kromni’s altitude underscores its mountain character.

Another point of interest in nature in the Municipality of Pella is the “Kromni Giannitsa” wildlife refuge. It lies in the north-northwestern part of the municipality, within the Δημοτική Ενότητα Κύρρου. The protected area and the settlement of Kromni are two distinct points of interest if you’re curious about the region’s landscapes and places.

Giannitsa: Funerary Art and Historical Memory

The mausoleum of Gazi Evrenos in Giannitsa preserves a box-shaped burial chamber with frescoes that imitate marble panelling. A marble stele bearing an inscription from Gazi Evrenos’s tomb is also displayed there. The burial place of Gazi Evrenos and his descendants gradually developed the features of a pilgrimage site. In this way, tangible traces of funerary design sit alongside the site’s longer history. This makes Giannitsa a different cultural focus from the mosaics and Agora of ancient Pella.

A Route with Two Time Estimates

Near the destination, the usual route from Eleftherochori reaches the Aloni site, at an elevation of 830 metres, in 45 minutes. From there, the so-called Roman Road leads to the Germanos Plateau in 1 hour and 45 minutes. These times are estimates and describe consecutive sections: the first leads to Aloni, and the second starts there. Comparing them helps you distinguish the shorter first stage from the longer continuation and factor the overall time for this route into your plans.

Local Flavours as Another Perspective

Pella’s regional food culture is another point of interest. The municipal initiative “Pella of Flavours” promoted local products and businesses that carry on the region’s long-standing tradition of distinctive flavours. This adds a culinary perspective to the archaeological and landscape themes, without focusing on particular buildings or routes.

What to Consider When Choosing Where to Stay

Let your travel interests guide your choice of location: ancient history takes centre stage in Pella, with its residential quarter, Agora and mosaics; Kromni offers a traditional mountain settlement with stone houses and a church; the route via Aloni continues to the Germanos Plateau. Giannitsa adds the mausoleum and the history of Gazi Evrenos to your cultural discoveries. Choose a holiday apartment based on which of these themes you’d most like to explore during your stay.
