Ypati: Discover history and trails
Accommodation in Ypati
Ypati brings together traces of history and documented trails leading to all kinds of discoveries. In the churches and at the Byzantine castle, you will encounter evidence from different periods; along the trails, a small church and Kremastos Waterfall take centre stage. You can shape your stay around architectural history, a visit to the observatory arranged in advance, and time outdoors.
Early Christian traces and fortified history
A section of the mosaic floor in the courtyard and reused sculptural pieces in the Church of Saint Nicholas point to an early Christian basilica dating from the 4th to the 6th century. Hagia Sophia also tells the story of several periods of construction: it was built on the site of an older church, probably dating from the early Christian period. Architectural elements from the early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods are incorporated into its façades. Remains of a 5th-century baptistery were also found on the south side.
Ypati was first fortified in the Hellenistic period. Remains of these fortifications are found at several points around the castle and the present-day settlement. Several remains of the Byzantine castle have also survived, including the ruins of a round tower. Together, the churches, archaeological traces and fortification remains offer various points of interest for anyone interested in the area's long history and architectural heritage.
Trails from the small church to the waterfall
An unusual uphill route leads from Ypati to the small church of Arsali. It is named “Χωριό Υπάτη - Εκκλησάκι Αρσαλή”. Another type of trail is the “Γύρος της Υπάτης”, described as a circular route. This gives you two different ideas: a route with a named destination and a circular trail.
Another documented trail descends from Ypati through a phrygana ecosystem with ασφάκες and λαδανιές to the Xirias. It then follows the stream to the 45-metre-high Kremastos Waterfall. The route description connects a specific landscape and vegetation with a definite destination. It offers a different perspective on Ypati from its historic buildings and archaeological traces.
Observatory, marathon and thermal park
The Σ.Ε.Α.Φ. operates an observatory at the “Κακογιάννειο” Αστεροσχολείο Υπάτης. To arrange tours outside school hours, you can contact the Σ.Ε.Α.Φ. staff; the tours are held in cooperation with the Municipality of Lamia. Arrange such a visit in advance. The Oiti Mountain Marathon is also an annual event: it takes place every year on the trails around Ypati. If you want your trip to coincide with the event, check the dates and details in advance.
Nearby, in Loutra Ypatis, there is a pine-covered park of about 90 stremmata, intended for recreation. It features thermal springs, modern hydrotherapy facilities and an outdoor thermal-water swimming pool. Accounts from the mid-20th century indicate that the thermal spring at Loutra Ypatis was already in use in antiquity. Before visiting, check the current status of the park facilities.
When looking for a holiday apartment, the experiences you have planned can help determine your focus: architectural history, one of the described trail options, or an observatory tour arranged in advance each makes for a different day plan. If you also plan to visit the thermal park, bear in mind that it is in nearby Loutra Ypatis.
