Piraeus brings together maritime history, theater culture and experiences by the water. A neoclassical theater, the collections of the Hellenic Maritime Museum and routes around the peninsula offer different highlights. There is also an organized beach, a waterfront promenade and a range of water sports. If you are traveling with family, different interests can shape the day’s plans: architectural history and collections, an outdoor route or activities on the water. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which focus you want to shape your stay.

Theater Architecture and Maritime History

The Δημοτικό Θέατρο Πειραιά is a neoclassical building. It was inaugurated on April 9, 1895, and reopened to the public on October 22, 2013, following a complete renovation. The two dates mark different stages: the first is the inauguration, the second the historic reopening. The Veakeio Theater is also defined by its location: it stands at the top of Kastella Hill. The two theaters therefore have distinct points of reference—the one for its architectural history, the other for its hilltop location.

The Hellenic Maritime Museum adds the history of seafaring to this picture of Piraeus. Its permanent exhibition includes a model of the Hydriot brig “Aris” and a collection of cannons from ships of that era. The museum also presents naval operations and Greek ships from the Balkan Wars through ship models, historical memorabilia and works of art. Whether you are interested in a specific named ship or a broader historical subject, you will find both perspectives here.

One way to reach the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus is to take Metro Line 3 to Dimotiko Theatro station, which is 800 m away. Check the connection before setting off, as transport services can change.

Routes and Coastal Spots

Two routes make it easy to compare their length and course. The route through the city center is 1.5 km long and runs from the port of Piraeus to the city center. The route on Piraiki is 2.5 km long and follows the waterfront along the Piraiki Peninsula. The city-center route is therefore one kilometer shorter; the two also differ in that one leads from the port to the center, while the other follows the water around the peninsula. These differences can help you choose the route that best suits the journey you want.

Freattyda has an organized beach with umbrellas, sun loungers and beach bars. Facilities can vary by season, so keep this in mind if you are planning a beach visit. Mikrolimano offers a different waterfront perspective: its promenade has restaurants and cafés, with views of moored boats and fishing boats.

There is also a distinct focus for a meal break: along Piraiki, you will find traditional Greek restaurants, as well as fish tavernas, ouzeries and cafés. Individual businesses may change. The range of venues makes Piraiki a possible culinary addition to a stay that also includes time by the water.

Water Activities and Planning Your Holiday Apartment

Water sports in Piraeus include canoeing and kayaking, sailing, inflatable boat rides, water skiing and windsurfing. Businesses in Zea Marina and Mikrolimano offer organized sea experiences with experienced guides; the availability of individual providers may change. If you are interested in a particular activity, check the specific offering before making your plans.

When choosing your holiday apartment, use your plans for the day as a guide: are theater and the museum your priority, or do you mainly want to include routes, the beach and the waterfront promenade? Include the places that matter to you when comparing locations. If you are traveling with people who have different interests, it helps to agree on a shared priority—for example, architectural history, a walk by the water or water sports. This lets you focus your search on the kind of stay you want in Piraeus.
