Agios Konstantinos is marked by a distinctive mining heritage: evidence of ore extraction meets a landscape where mining history is also visible in the terrain. Serpieri No. 1 ore shaft is 165 metres deep. The French Mining Company of Lavrio built it in 1880. It was used to extract ore and transport personnel to the underground mines. At this site, the history of the technical facilities is intertwined with their function in mining.

Industrial History in Kamariza

The Kamariza mining centre is located in Agios Konstantinos. The building that housed the ore shaft’s drive motor now houses the Kamariza Mineralogical and Mining Museum. In 1987, the mining centre and the surrounding area were designated a historic monument. This designation marks the significance of the complex, while the surviving structures and facilities give concrete form to its industrial character.

The winding shaft, the winding engine house and two lifts have survived at the mining centre. Most of the buildings are also still standing; they are characteristic examples of 19th-century industrial architecture. The visible mining heritage in Agios Konstantinos also includes an ore-loading bridge and parts of the open-air storage areas where the ore was sorted. Together, these different elements show how closely extraction, transport and sorting were connected to the area’s built character. Those interested in industrial history will find not just a single shaft here, but several kinds of evidence that make it possible to distinguish the different tasks involved in mining.

Discover the Landscape Around the Village

Nearby is Έγκοιλο Χάος (Κίτσου), a circular shaft 55 metres deep and 120 metres in diameter. It probably formed when the roof of a cave collapsed. Limestone and schist formations are visible on its walls; entrances to mine tunnels are located high above. Geology and mining history meet here in a landform whose dimensions can be described in precise measurements.
