Holiday accommodation in Sandwell: nature, canals and cultural heritage

Sandwell showcases its geological features at the Rowley Hills: they are the highest landscape feature in the Black Country. At Blue Rock Quarry in the Rowley Hills, rock formed more than 300 million years ago is exposed. In the regional context, Sandwell Valley Country Park is also one of the sites of the Black Country Geopark in Sandwell.

Nature

The RSPB Sandwell Valley Nature Reserve has a great diversity of natural habitats and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Paths run through the area, complemented by nature play facilities and a visitor centre. In spring and summer, reed warblers and reed buntings breed by the lake; chicks of the northern lapwing can also be seen there. The paths are suitable for pushchairs, and there are no livestock gates, stiles or barriers.

Sandwell Valley Country Park offers opportunities for walking, birdwatching and sports. Dartmouth Park is a Grade II listed park with a play area, fishing ponds, flower displays, a sensory garden and a pavilion.

Experiences

Forge Mill Farm offers a farm trail, interactive activities, a play barn, a farm shop and educational programmes. The farm is home to rare-breed animals and also offers an interactive educational tour about animal welfare and the origin of our food.

Warrens Hall Nature Reserve is a green space with wildlife, fishing ponds, old industrial structures and a visitor centre. It also has walking and jogging paths.

History

Oak House Museum is a timber-framed farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with a significant collection of Jacobean furniture. Wednesbury Museum and Art Gallery houses paintings, toys, Ruskin pottery and many other objects. Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre has a museum about the history of Sandwell Priory and the larger Sandwell Valley Estate.

Haden Hill House is a late Victorian residence that now serves as a period-furnished museum in a large park. Haden Hall, a restored Jacobean manor house, stands next to it and is opened to the public several times a year.

Bromwich Hall is a medieval moated manor house built by Richard de Marnham in the 1270s. This listed visitor attraction is one of the most significant surviving medieval timber-framed buildings in the Midlands.

Galton Valley Pumping Station is a late Victorian canal pumping station built to supply the Smethwick Locks. From April to October, volunteers open the station on one Saturday each month; admission is free. The cottage, built in the 18th century, was where Francis Asbury, the first American Methodist bishop, spent his youth.

Getting around

On the Birmingham Newline Canal, it is possible to cycle car-free from Wolverhampton via Tipton, Oldbury and Smethwick to Birmingham. On the Tame Valley Canal, a car-free cycle ride is possible from Tamebridge via Hamstead to Birmingham. Sandwell TravelWise provides public transport journey planning, bus connections to railway and metro stations, as well as cycling and walking routes.

Activities

Sandwell Aquatics Centre includes an Olympic-sized 50-metre swimming pool, a 10-metre-high competition diving tower and a 25-metre diving pool.

Mad O'Rourke's World Famous Pie Factory offers visitors a unique, entertaining and quirky atmosphere shaped by heritage.
