At the Black Country Living Museum, visitors can explore reconstructed, recreated or restored shops, houses and industrial workshops on a self-guided tour. Dudley Canal and Caverns offers another perspective on the region’s history: there, a 45-minute boat trip led by a boat guide takes visitors through 250-year-old tunnels, large caverns and pools teeming with wildlife.

Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve also combines nature experiences with discovery. It is one of the most significant geological sites in the British Isles and has four waymarked circular trails. During the guided “Hunt the Dudley Bug” walk, visitors can also search for fossils.

Nature

Saltwells National Nature Reserve is one of the largest urban nature reserves in the United Kingdom. Well-marked paths for all levels of difficulty run through the area. It is also home to a nationally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument featuring medieval coal-mining workings.

In the wider landscape, Buckpool, Fens Pools and Barrow Hill form a network of local nature reserves with diverse habitats that support wildlife. At Buckpool, visitors can watch kingfishers. The wardens of these nature reserves support public access through events, educational visits and volunteering activities.

Cotwall End Valley encompasses nutrient-rich grassland, ancient and semi-natural woodland, and lowland heath. The footpath in Cotwall End Nature Reserve leads through wooded valleys with ponds, streams and natural springs. There is also nationally rare flora and fauna, including several orchid species and the endangered great crested newt. Dudley’s canal network forms a green corridor through the predominantly urban landscape.

Culture

Dudley Museum at the Archives tells the story of Dudley and the wider Black Country region over time. Its offerings include family activities and talks, as well as content on fossils, dinosaurs and art. The Stourbridge Glass Museum houses a world-renowned collection of objects dating back up to 400 years. The museum’s live hot shop demonstrates glassmaking.

In Wordsley, the Red House Glass Cone was built at the end of the 18th century and used for glassmaking until 1936. It is one of only four surviving glass cones in the United Kingdom and is considered the most complete in Europe. The Lace Guild also preserves a distinctive craft heritage: it welcomes members and non-members to The Hollies, home to a collection of lace and lace-related objects recognised as an accredited museum.

History

The Leasowes is a historic landscape and is listed at Grade I on the English Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. The site is regarded as one of the first naturalistic landscape gardens in England and as one of the most significant and influential landscapes of the 18th century. Today, The Leasowes offers pleasant walks along the streams flowing through the woodland.

History and leisure also come together in Bumble Hole and Warrens Hall nature reserves. They are suitable for leisurely walks and picnics. The visitor centre includes historical exhibitions, and every September the nature reserves host the Black Country Boating Festival.

The nearest railway station to Dudley Museum at the Archives is Tipton on the line between Birmingham and Wolverhampton; it is approximately one mile from the museum. The Dudley Borough has local and architectural guides with brief historical explanations, suggested walking routes and information about the locations of information boards.
