Llangian – Early Medieval Traces and Trails

The Latin inscription reads “MELI MEDICI / FILI MARTINI / IACIT” and refers to Melus, the doctor and son of Martinus. A daughter chapel dedicated to St Ynyr may have been documented since the 13th century and is certainly recorded from the 15th to the 16th century; it was demolished towards the end of the 18th century. The site of the former daughter chapel is now marked by a platform and an enclosure.

Another historical aspect is provided by the Methodist Chapel in Llangian. It was built in 1878 in the style of a simple round-arched chapel with a gabled entrance. To the north of Llangian, faint ditches also indicate a twice-fortified inland promontory fort commanding a small elevated area. In the wider landscape, a prominent feature runs from east to west, connects Abersoch and Llangian, and is occupied by the Afon Soch.
