A prominent landscape feature of Dumfries And Galloway is Galloway Forest Park. It is considered the largest forest park in Great Britain and covers more than 300 square miles. At the same time, it offers opportunities for walking and was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2009. The UNESCO Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Reserve includes Dumfries and Galloway and complements this expansive natural setting with a broader landscape context.

Nature and trails

Cairnsmore of Fleet NNR protects upland habitats ranging from heath moorland to blanket bog. It has the low-level In-bye Trail as well as a more challenging mountain route to the Clints of Dromore. The nature reserve includes impressive upland landscapes and spectacular wildlife. Nature watching is also the focus at the Red Deer Range: a viewpoint and a viewing hide are used for observing red deer.

Grey Mare’s Tail is one of the highest waterfalls in the United Kingdom and plunges 60 metres from Loch Skeen. Walking trails offer impressive views there. Wildlife at Grey Mare’s Tail includes ospreys, ring ouzels, feral goats and nesting peregrine falcons. A short ascent to Bruce’s Stone offers a panorama over Loch Trool.

At Threave Garden, guided walks are offered around Scotland’s only bat reserve. Each garden room showcases a different garden style and planting concept. Near the boat landing at Threave Castle, a volunteer-run Osprey Viewing Platform is available from March to September. In Logan Botanic Garden, the Gulf Stream creates an almost subtropical climate. The garden covers 15 acres with exotic plants and supports research, education and conservation by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Rare animals and plants live on the grounds of Caerlaverock Castle, which lie next to Caerlaverock Nature Reserve. The Wild Goat Park offers views of an ancient, long-haired breed of goat. Polmaddy is the ruin of an agricultural settlement that visitors can explore.

Culture and history

Caerlaverock Castle has a triangular shape unique among British castles. Sweetheart Abbey was founded in 1273 as the Cistercian abbey of Dulce Cor. Parts of the ruins and grounds are open to visitors, including the nave and cloister. In 2026, Wigtown will host the Wigtown Book Festival, a ten-day literary event in Scotland’s National Book Town.

Cycling and regional specialities

The Dalbeattie 7stanes centre is known for technical trails, granite features and magnificent coastal views. The Big Country Ride is a 58-kilometre mountain bike route through hilly landscapes, public roads and forest tracks. In Castle Douglas, more than 50 independent shops offer locally produced food, drinks and confectionery. The Castle Douglas Food and Bike Festival showcases cycling as well as food and drink.

Getting there

Bus 407 from Stranraer stops at the end of the road leading to Logan Botanic Garden. In the east of Dumfries and Galloway, trains run from Carlisle or Glasgow via Gretna Green, Annan, Dumfries, Sanquhar and Kirkconnell.
