In Wandsworth, water, protected open spaces, industrial history, theatre, markets and car-free paths come together. Among listed buildings, parks and independent cultural venues, a varied picture of the London Borough of Wandsworth emerges.

Water

Tooting Bec Lido is the largest freshwater outdoor swimming pool in the United Kingdom. It features a 90-metre outdoor pool with lane swimming and relaxed open-swimming sessions during the summer season. First opened in 1906, the facility still has colourful changing rooms and spacious areas around the pool.

Nature

Battersea Park is a 200-acre Victorian riverside park with a promenade along the Thames, a lake, notable trees, ecological areas and sports facilities. The park is also home to Battersea Park Zoo, Go Ape, a bicycle hire service, a boat hire service and Putt in the Park.

Culture and history

Battersea Power Station is a Grade II* listed interwar power station in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The building houses the free exhibition “Power of Place – The Making of Battersea Power Station”, which explores the building’s journey from decommissioning to reopening. After an exhibition in the Art Deco Turbine Hall A, the Chimney Lift takes visitors to a height of 109 metres inside one of the chimneys.

Battersea Arts Centre has been operating as an arts centre and performance venue since 1980. It is located in the former Battersea Town Hall, a Grade II* listed building associated with radical politics and the campaign for women’s suffrage. The former town hall contains around 70 rooms, including a theatre hall.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Putney retains fabric dating from the 15th century, along with additions from the early 16th and early 17th centuries. Wandsworth Council also provides downloadable audio guides for walks in Putney.
