Enfield combines more than 900 hectares of green spaces with an extensive network of public footpaths and permitted trails. Added to this are historic estates, botanical gardens, museums, parklands and places offering cultural or sporting activities. Among water features, ancient woods, lakes and well-kept gardens, the London borough reveals itself in an unusually diverse way.

Nature

Broomfield Park is home to a rare example of an 18th-century Baroque water garden. The park also features a bandstand where live concerts are held, as well as a pond for model boats and an adventure playground. Capel Manor Gardens include productive and ornamental gardens, a woodland walk with spring bulbs, and a lake with koi carp. The grounds also include a publicly accessible miniature zoo with keeper talks and animal encounters.

Further extensive landscapes can be found in Trent Country Park, which covers more than 400 acres of meadows, woodland and lakes. Trent Park Equestrian Centre offers group and individual riding lessons, riding courses, riding parties and equestrian events. Whitewebbs Park covers 196 acres of parkland and woodland, including paths through ancient woodland. The Lee Valley Regional Park also runs through Enfield, with accessible landscapes, nature reserves, lakes, canals, riverside paths, an athletics centre and a white-water centre.

History

The Forty Hall Estate includes Forty Hall, a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion associated with Sir Nicholas Rainton. The estate also encompasses 273 acres of listed landscape with an ornamental pond, medieval fishponds, streams and a walled garden. Several paths lead through the grounds and parkland, ranging in length from 1.1 to 6.3 kilometres.

The Forty Hall Estate is approximately a 20-minute walk from Turkey Street, Gordon Hill and Enfield Town stations. Trent Park also has a layered past: it developed from an 18th-century hunting park into a significant estate and later became Trent Country Park.

Culture

The Museum of Enfield holds around 20,000 objects relating to Enfield’s places, people and businesses. Highlights from the collection are displayed in a permanent gallery; exhibitions are held twice a year at the Dugdale Arts Centre. The museum also regularly presents a mobile outdoor exhibition and museum events such as talks and escape rooms.

The Myddelton House Gardens offer a special combination of garden art, local history and botany. The eight-acre botanical garden was the lifelong home of the gardener E. A. Bowles. New River Lawn preserves the course of the former section of the New River that ran through the garden. The Bowles Museum presents the life of E. Bowles, the history of the house and some of his paintings. For a break, the Bowles Tea Room serves hot and cold food as well as refreshments.

Enfield also has a viticultural history: Forty Hall Vineyard is London’s first vineyard since the Middle Ages and, in cooperation with Capel Manor College, continues the winemaking tradition introduced to England by the Romans. The cultural offering is complemented by a cultural meeting place with music, theatre, workshops and community events, as well as food and drink options and social gatherings.

Activities

The parklands bring together different forms of exercise and leisure without confining Enfield to a single type of landscape. A family-run business offers year-round picking of more than 20 crops, including blackcurrants, tayberries, broad beans, spinach and chard.
