Church, castle and Reformation history
Construction of the town church of St. George began in 1413/14, incorporating parts of an earlier Romanesque church. The church took on particular significance in 1537: at the most important assembly of the Schmalkaldic League, the leading theologians of the day preached there, and Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles there. The building’s history and the events of the Reformation thus meet in one place.
Wilhelmsburg Castle rises above the old town. Its permanent exhibition explores the era of Martin Luther and the Schmalkaldic League. At the Wilhelmsburg Castle Museum, visitors can also see the splendid ceremonial halls, the richly decorated castle church and original room layouts featuring wall paintings and stucco work. The Historicum Tin Figure Museum offers a different perspective: across 400 m², it displays more than 20,000 fully three-dimensional, hand-painted tin figures in staged scenes from world history. The many figures and scenes bring history to life on a small scale, while the town church and castle convey their historical themes through buildings and rooms.
Discover half-timbered houses and explore industrial history
The Luther House in Schmalkalden is a half-timbered house built around 1520. At the half-timbered house experience museum, you can explore vaulted cellars, living rooms, stairways and a crawlspace. There are also façades, masonry and wall structures, a front building and a courtyard. You can also discover the connection between historic and modern architecture. The house is described as Schmalkalden’s oldest half-timbered house and is also one of the five oldest half-timbered houses in Thuringia.
The Neue Hütte offers a very different way to experience architectural history. Thanks to its excellent state of preservation, the early industrial blast furnace complex can still be understood as a whole. Visitors can explore the original furnace all the way around and climb to a height of more than 11 metres. The half-timbered house experience museum focuses on homes and building styles, whereas the Neue Hütte showcases a preserved industrial complex and its furnace.
Make your own nougat and explore the town on foot
At the Viba Nougat World, you can watch soft, melting nougat being made through the glass walls of a manufactory. Public guided tours of the historic old town are offered from April to October. Confirm the dates and departure details with the Tourist Information in advance.
