Triptis: Castle Tower and Natural Landscape
Accommodation in Triptis
Triptis offers two distinctive starting points for your trip: the nearly 1,000-year-old castle tower near the town center, and the area around the Triptis reservoir to the east of town. The tower is the surviving remnant of the former castle, also known as Triptis Castle. The area around the reservoir and the adjoining Orla spring area are jointly designated as a protected biotope and local recreation area. This gives you a choice between local history and natural landscapes as different focuses for your trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Triptis, first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your trip most.

Saale-Orla: Water, Trails and Landscapes on a Wider Scale
The wider Saale-Orla destination offers further landscape highlights. The Saale, with the approximately 80-kilometer-long Saale Cascade, which has five dams, forms Europe’s largest continuous reservoir area, the Thuringian Sea. Bleiloch Reservoir is Germany’s largest reservoir. At Hohenwarte Reservoir, the Mühlenfähre ferry connects the landing stages at Linkenmühle and Altenroth. It operates seasonally; check the timetable before your trip if you plan to cross by ferry.
Hiking and cycling routes also offer different regional perspectives. In Wurzbach, more than 120 kilometers of signposted hiking trails invite you to explore the low mountain landscape. Near Neustadt an der Orla stands the 32.65-meter-high Bismarck Tower; the medieval Hohe Straße runs right past it. The Ziegenrück Slate Fold is a natural monument. The Schleizer Dreieck, Germany’s oldest natural race circuit, is another regional attraction.
Two of the cycling routes include the Orla Cycle Route, which runs through Neustadt an der Orla, and the Oberland Cycle Route, which goes from Schleiz to the Thuringian Sea. The 168-kilometer Rennsteig begins or ends in Blankenstein. These examples represent a range of interests—from hiking and cycling to motorsport history—and can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your trip.
Museums and History in Saale-Orla
The Schloß Burgk Museum houses historic living quarters and exhibition rooms with valuable interiors, as well as collections and exhibitions. Its bookplate collection contains more than 200,000 prints and is the museum’s largest specialist collection. The museum also hosts concerts and festivals; you can check specific dates when planning your trip.
Europe’s largest and most powerful steam engine is located at the Heinrichshütte foundry in Wurzbach. Heinrichshütte is an interactive museum where visitors can get hands-on, and it welcomes families with children as well as children from daycare centers and schools. At Museum642, visitors of all ages can explore the history of Pößneck and every level of the museum on an individual multimedia tour.
Other historical topics range from archaeology to the history of technology. The Wysburg near Weisbach is an archaeological excavation site of an old robber baron’s castle and a destination for day trips. The Burg Ranis Museum offers insights into the geology of the Orla Valley, the Ice Age and the history of the castle. The hydroelectric power museum in Ziegenrück is described as the only museum of its kind in Germany. Together, these examples show the variety of cultural and historical topics in the wider Saale-Orla destination.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Focus
Having a clear priority helps when looking for a holiday apartment: do you want Triptis itself, with its castle tower and protected biotope and recreation area, to be the main focus, or are you planning your time primarily around a particular destination in the wider Saale-Orla area? First decide which places and themes you want to shape your trip. That way, you can focus your holiday apartment search on what you actually want to do.
