Markt-Höhler and town history

The Markt-Höhler is a tunnel in the Schlossberg more than 50 metres long, with 20 chambers. It was created from 1780 onwards for storing beer. Today, its historical purpose is linked with insights into mining and geology: guided tours of the Markt-Höhler cover all three topics. At the mining museum, children can try their hand at being little miners using historical tools. These offer different ways to experience the tunnel: a hands-on activity for children and themed tours for anyone who would like to learn more about its history.

The Bad Lobenstein Regional Museum also focuses on the town and its development. On display are cultural and historical objects relating to the town’s history, local crafts and the castle complex. One special item is the 1793 horizontal loom, which is still in use today. At the New Palace, you can visit exhibitions on the history of the Reuss region and its coinage, as well as the history of Lobenstein’s pharmacies. The Old Tower has been converted into an observation tower. From its viewing platform, you can enjoy panoramic views across Bad Lobenstein, neighbouring villages and far into the distance. Both places offer a different perspective on the surroundings from that of the historical collections and exhibitions.

For a longer outing, the circular hiking trail to Heinrichstein is a specific option: it is 10.3 kilometres long and classified as moderate. It is marked first with a white square with a red triangle, followed by a white square with a yellow bar. The Heinrichstein viewpoint is on a rocky outcrop about 120 metres above the water level of the Saale; from there, you can see the Bleiloch Reservoir. There are well-marked hiking trails around Bad Lobenstein. Other marked trails run along the Rennsteig and by the Thuringian Sea.

Swimming and sauna

The municipal outdoor pool in Bad Lobenstein’s Koseltal valley offers swimming in the summer months. The facilities include a large sunbathing lawn, a volleyball and table tennis area, and a playground. This seasonal swimming option differs from the extensive sauna and wellness area at the ARDESIA-Therme: it has two Finnish saunas, a steam bath, a tepidarium, a bio sauna, a moor sauna and an outdoor Finnish sauna with a wood-burning stove. Exercise and plunge pools, showers, foot baths, Kneipp treatments, a relaxation room, solariums, a sauna bar and a sauna garden complete the facilities.

Bad Lobenstein in Saale-Orla
