Hohenstein – Nature, Churches and Special Discoveries
Accommodation in Hohenstein
Hohenstein offers plenty of reasons to take a closer look: a protected natural monument in Trebra, walks in the Sülzensee nature reserve and churches with distinctive features. There is also the Gesundbrunnen spring in Trebra Forest and the Sandkuhle, a former sand pit that hikers and cyclists can explore. This gives you several different themes to choose from when planning your holiday – from nature and outdoor activities to architecture, history and local customs.

Discover nature: from the Peace Oak to the Sandkuhle
The Trebra Peace Oak, also known as the Imperial Oak, stands in Trebra. It has been protected and designated a natural monument since 1988. Anyone interested in natural monuments will find a specific point of interest here in Trebra. The name Imperial Oak is another name for the same tree.
Another highlight is the Sülzensee nature reserve in Mackenrode. Its wide-open paths invite you to set aside time for walks. This offers a different focus from exploring a single natural monument: here, the walk through the nature reserve takes centre stage. If you would like to bring together different interests on your trip, nature experiences and Hohenstein’s historic churches offer different themes for your days of discovery.
The Sandkuhle in the Trebra district is a former sand pit. Its notable features include a shelter and a view of Lohra Castle. Hikers and cyclists can explore the Sandkuhle; cars can be parked beside the road. You can choose an outing to suit whether you prefer to travel on foot or by bike. Its former use as a sand pit distinguishes this place from a walk in the Sülzensee nature reserve.
Churches and art in Trebra, Limlingerode and Holbach
The Church of St Nicholas in Trebra was built around 1700 on the site of its predecessor. It is a Baroque hall church with a very tall west tower built of dressed stone blocks. Anyone interested in architecture can pay particular attention to these two features: the hall’s architectural form and the soaring tower. The date of construction and the location of the earlier church also give the building a historical connection.
Several distinctive features come together in the church in Limlingerode. It contains a baptismal font dating from the time of the earliest written mention of the village, in 1233. A carved baptismal angel, made around 1710, hovers above the font. The organ is a popular concert instrument. Limlingerode therefore offers culture enthusiasts several points of interest: the early baptismal font, the carved figure and the organ as a concert instrument.
The Church of St Bartholomew in Holbach also has a clearly defined architectural character: it was built in 1745, and a tower topped by a Baroque half-timbered cupola stands on its south side. Together with the Baroque hall church in Trebra and the furnishings in Limlingerode, it offers a chance to explore different aspects of ecclesiastical architectural and art history.
A forest spring and local traditions
At the Gesundbrunnen spring in Trebra Forest, there is a covered spring with pure water and a shelter with a fire pit. Information boards cover the history of the site and the forest. The Gesundbrunnen offers a refreshing stop and is a popular destination for an outing.
In July, the Limlingerode Schützenverein e.V. holds its Schützenfest (marksmen’s festival). The programme includes a concert, dancing, a shooting competition and other customs. This adds a local festival to the nature and cultural attractions. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, July is the time of year given; no specific date is provided here.
