St. Boniface: Building History and Features
The Church of St. Boniface was built in 1716 as a hall church made of natural stone. Its massive eastern tower is medieval at its core, bringing an earlier building phase into the church’s appearance. A sacristy was added in 1830. Inside, a plastered barrel vault spans the nave, and a three-sided gallery shapes the space. The Baroque pulpit altar features Corinthian columns and an altarpiece from around 1800 depicting Jesus and the Samaritan woman. The organ was built by Friedrich Gerhardt in the second half of the 19th century. The contrast between the tower’s medieval core, the Baroque altar and later additions makes the building’s history especially vivid.
Stone Cross and Circular Route
Another historical destination is the stone cross at a crossroads on the northern edge of Oberheldrungen. In Westgreußen, the Funkenburg adds another attraction to the region: a reconstruction of a Germanic settlement, unique in Germany, on a prominent spur above the Helbe Valley. Its educational activity programmes include pottery, baking, wool processing, fishing-net making and archery.
