Half-timbered houses and history in Holzthaleben
Medieval half-timbered houses can be found in Holzthaleben on Angerstraße, Mitteldorf, Hermann-Töppe-Straße, Obergasse and Brunnenstraße. An old bakehouse is also part of the village scene; today it serves as a local history museum. The two types of building offer different points of interest: the half-timbered houses on the one hand, and a bakehouse now used as a museum on the other.
The last of the plague linden trees stands on Keulaer Straße. It is around 300 years old and has a circumference of five metres. The Helbeburg, a former refuge castle, is located above this section of the Helbetal Valley. Its outer rampart is clearly visible; finds from the site date its construction back to the Bronze Age. The medieval “Steinerne Jungfrau” (Stone Maiden) atonement cross is also in the Helbetal Valley. The tree, rampart and cross each provide a distinct point of reference for local history.
The Helbetal Valley and art in Friedrichsrode
From Friedrichsrode’s eastern entrance, you can walk into the scenic and varied Helbetal Valley, which is ideal for hiking and exploring nature. The “Seh-Weg” (See-Way) runs around Friedrichsrode and is designed as a herb and sculpture trail. This offers two different options: exploring the valley on foot, or discovering herbs and sculptures along a trail.
Art and education are also among the attractions in Friedrichsrode. The KUNSTHOF offers creative and educational activities, including seminars and workshops, as well as programmes at the school camp. You can ask the operator which activities are currently available. The KUNSTMARKT takes place on the third Saturday in June each year. Its 34th edition was held on 20 June 2026; the programme included art, culture, live music, exhibitors and open courtyards. The date and programme give the market a different character from the trails and historic landmarks, which can also help guide your holiday plans.
A closer look at the wider destination of Kyffhäuserkreis
In the wider destination of Kyffhäuserkreis, Barbarossa Cave offers a distinctive geological and historical attraction. It is an anhydrite cave between the districts of Rottleben and Steinthaleben in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. Five miners discovered it in 1865 in connection with the resumption of copper shale mining. The cave was named after the legend of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who is said to return one day. Here, cave geology, mining history and a traditional legend come together.
Also in Kyffhäuserkreis, the Sondershausen Adventure Mine offers guided tours year-round at a depth of 670 metres. These include an approximately two-hour truck tour through the underground labyrinth. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check the current dates with the operator. These regional attractions add further distinct points of interest to the options of the Helbetal Valley, art and local history.
