Großliebringen lies 5 km southeast of the Ilm in the Deubetal, which was named after the Deube stream. You can rent a holiday apartment in Großliebringen.

History and Culture

The settlement is documented in a deed from 1106 under the name “Lyeberga”; the document is associated with the later Paulinzella Monastery. The prefix “Groß-” was added around 1300.

The historic church of Großliebringen is first mentioned in 1119. Remains of a defensive wall with embrasures have been preserved, and the church acquired its present appearance around 1900.

The Edelhof was a former fortified feudal residence surrounded by a moat. A half-timbered building and part of the moat have been preserved.

A school is documented in Großliebringen as early as before 1533. The school building later burned down, in 1690; it was described as being more than 300 years old.

The surrounding area of Großliebringen includes the Upper Castle (Kranichfeld) and Schwarzburg Castle. In the wider regional area are Arnstadt Castle Museum, Heidecksburg, Zipptannskuppe, Kienberg and the Feengrotten. Döllstedter Berg is also located nearby.

The remains of the water fortification are privately owned. An exterior viewing is possible at any time; the residents’ privacy should be respected.

Großliebringen is reported to have an elevation of approximately 422 metres above sea level; a range of 415 to 430 metres is given.
