Schwarzbach offers two very different starting points for a trip: a kart track and a local history whose first documented mention dates back to 1317. When planning a vacation, you can first decide which of these themes you want to focus on. The wider Auengrund destination adds nature trails, landscapes, and other historical themes. You can focus on Schwarzbach or include other places in Auengrund.

Kart Track in Schwarzbach

Schwarzbach has a kart track that the municipality describes as the largest outdoor kart track in southern Thuringia. It is a clearly defined leisure activity to consider when planning your trip. If you would like to include the kart track in your itinerary, check in advance what visiting options are available for your chosen dates.

History from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century

Schwarzbach was first documented in 1317, together with the Brattendorf manor. On January 10, 1721, Duke Ernst the Pious granted the village the right to serve drinks and brew beer. The right covered both serving drinks and brewing beer. During the 1866 war between Austria and Prussia, the Schwarzbach brewery supplied the Bavarian Army. Two distinct historical aspects come together here: the granting of rights and the supply of an army during wartime. Schwarzbach also had a castle, making it one of only a few villages to do so. These themes span from the joint documented mention in the 14th century to the brewery’s role during the 19th-century war.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Auengrund Area

The wider Auengrund destination also offers nature and hiking experiences. The “Crocker Kesseltal” Nature Park Trail is 7.5 km long and winds up and down over around 200 meters of elevation gain around Crock, through a diverse natural landscape on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest. The route length and elevation profile are useful details for planning your hike; check current trail conditions before setting out. In Auengrund, unspoiled hiking trails through extensive woodland also invite you to hike and cycle.

Wiedersbach lies in the valley of the stream of the same name, is surrounded by mountains, and is located in the Hildburghäuser Wald Landscape Protection Area. The Elsterbachtal and Dinkelshaak nature reserves, the Wiedersbacher moors, and the Ratscher Reservoir surround Wiedersbach. These offer two distinct nature themes to consider when planning a trip to the wider Auengrund area: a named hiking trail near Crock and the landscape around Wiedersbach.

Other places in the wider Auengrund area also have their own cultural and historical themes. The church tower in Wiedersbach dates from 1601. A landwehr was built in the Poppenwind district and was once also called “Lampr.” In the 1970s, Crock clubs took the initiative to build a swimming pool and an open-air stage, offering the cultural and leisure activities of the time.
