Schmerbach lies on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest, in a basin-like valley at the foot of the Großer Inselsberg, at an elevation of approximately 360 to 385 metres. The surrounding area is home to Tenneberg Castle, Altenstein Castle, Wilhelmsthal Palace, and the Eisenach Thuringian Museum. The Großer Inselsberg, Weißenberg, Gerberstein, and Dreiherrnstein are also located in the surrounding area.

Schmerbach is a district of Waltershausen in the district of Gotha in Thuringia.

The Schmerbach flows through the village and empties into the Emse in neighbouring Schwarzhausen.

The B88 runs through Schmerbach, connecting the village westwards with Seebach and Wutha-Farnroda and eastwards with Waltershausen.

Waltershausen is a tourist starting point for the Thuringian Forest, the Großer Inselsberg, the Rennsteig, and cultural sites in Thuringia.
