St. Andreas: Organ, building history and altarpiece

The church’s construction date is reported with a qualification: according to an inscription in the nave, it is said to have been built in the early 17th century. The Hesse organ was restored in 2022. Thus, an early building history and a specific, more recent restoration date stand side by side, without providing any further information about its current use.

The church also houses a late Gothic altarpiece depicting the Lamentation of Christ. It comes from Erfurt’s Barfüßerkirche. St. Severus Church is a five-aisled Gothic hall church and, from the 12th century onward, was the collegiate church of a community of canons. The artworks found there include the Severi sarcophagus from 1365, whose side panels depict the saint’s life, a stone Madonna from 1345 and a 15-metre-high baptismal font from 1467. Within this closely related theme, church architecture and individual works of art, each with its own date of origin, stand side by side.

Fortress and gardens as alternative travel highlights

The Petersberg Citadel offers a different perspective on Erfurt. It is one of the largest Baroque city fortresses in Central Europe and the only one there to have been largely preserved. Several viewpoints offer sweeping views over the city; sunsets can be watched from the western Bastion Michael. The panoramic trail starts at Domplatz and provides independent access to the citadel without any additional aids.

The egapark Erfurt offers a focus on gardens. Its attractions include the Danakil Desert and Jungle House, themed gardens, the Forest of Knowledge and the German Horticultural Museum. Europe’s largest ornamental flower bed covers 6,000 m². The park also has Thuringia’s largest playground, covering an area of 35,000 m². The different gardens and facilities give a visit a different thematic focus from the Old Town’s historic buildings.
