History

Schnarup-Thumby is nestled in a diverse, hilly cultural landscape shaped by history.

St. John's Church was built around 1250 as a late Romanesque fieldstone church with a rectangular nave and a recessed box-shaped choir.

Its original east windows, as well as the granite south portal and the brick north portal, have been preserved. The west wall of St. John's Church dates from 1799, and the south porch from 1830. In 1891–1892, the church was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style by the architect Adalbert Hotzen. In the process, Adalbert Hotzen gave the interior a basilica-like appearance. Parts of the medieval furnishings have been preserved.

A wooden bell tower, dated to 1490, stands separately from the church building. The church architect Johannes Otzen was born in the municipality. The church stands just outside the settlement in the Angeln region.

Rural Character

Schnarup-Thumby is described as an agricultural and distinctly rural area. Traditional Angeln hedgerows shape the scenery, there is comparatively little traffic, and the area has a recreational character.

Schnarup-Thumby has a local inn, and cultural and sporting activities are part of village life.
