The “Ditches of the Northern Alte Sorge” nature reserve covers 421 hectares in Klein Bennebek. Above Fünfmühlen, the Alte Sorge features floating-leaf vegetation with water lilies and water soldier. The Reppelmoor is a former raised bog complex and is now described as a transitional bog with various stages of bog degradation.

The nature reserve is an important resting and feeding area for Bewick’s swans and white storks. The Eurasian otter has become re-established along the Alte Sorge after having been absent there since the late 1980s. In the Eider-Treene-Sorge region, the “Ditches of the Northern Alte Sorge” is also a distribution hotspot for the green hawker dragonfly. The area has an extensive network of partially surfaced paths.

Getting Around

The signposted Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route runs along the northern edge of the nature reserve. A signposted regional cycle route leads from Bergenhusen via Fünfmühlen and Reppel to Alt Bennebek and Klein Bennebek.

Kayakers and canoeists can use the Alte Sorge between the watermill and Fünfmühlen. Fishing on the Alte Sorge is associated with the Klein Bennebek angling club; the club has a hut or jetty on the eastern bank.

More Highlights

The Yeomanry course features different distances and levels of difficulty. A local course comprises 45 three-dimensional animal targets made of plastic, ranging from an owl to a moose. Klein Bennebek also has localities named Potsdam, Berlin, and Bellevue.
