The Danevirke Museum is located in Dannewerk near the Main Wall and central structures of the early medieval fortification. It explains the significance of the Danevirke in the German-Danish War of 1864 and its use during the Second World War. The archaeological park at the museum includes the Main Wall, the Thyraburg, the North Gate, the Waldemarsmauer and a reconstruction of Gun Emplacement 14.
The Main Wall near the Thyraburg has been dated to AD 737, placing it before the Viking Age. The Thyraburg is situated at a strategic bend in the Danevirke, at the end of the Main Wall next to the former Dannewerk Lake.

A nature trail around the former Dannewerk Lake combines experiencing the landscape with archaeology and environmental education. Information boards along the nature trail explain the local flora and fauna. They also cover old trees, wet biotopes, and the role and development of Dannewerk Lake within the historical defence system of the Danevirke.

Routes and Experiences
The motte-and-bailey castle presents the Middle Ages and regional history to children and interested adults in a playful way. The museum also offers a guided tour of the archaeological park: from the North Gate via the Main Wall and the Waldemarsmauer to the reconstructed Gun Emplacement 14 and back.
In the nearby area, a guided hike that begins at the Danevirke Museum follows the wall past the Thyraburg and through Busdorf to the Haithabu Viking Museum. The historic Ochsenweg runs through Dannewerk and past prehistoric Bronze Age burial mounds, including the two Tweebargen; the route is suitable for hiking along historical traces and for archaeological discovery outdoors.

Bus routes 8 and 670 run directly from Schleswig to the visitor centre of the Danevirke Museum.
